As more organizations take aspects of their business online, hackers exploit vulnerabilities to attack companies, steal customer data, and disrupt business. According to a recent study from IDC, 37% of global organizations state they were victims of ransomware attacks in 2021.

This article offers five measures you can take before a cyberattack occurs, not only to protect yourself and your customers but to help you rebound when a cyberattack inevitably occurs.

Protect and Monitor Remote Access
Flexible work arrangements and remote work are commonplace today. That means it is no longer enough just to worry about on-site security; monitoring system access via remote methods needs additional scrutiny. In the past, anyone remotely accessing servers or networks could trigger a red flag. With a large number of remote workers accessing systems at any given time, organizations need to take special care to know who is actually connecting to company networks.

However, systems and tools are necessary for remote employees to keep their access secure. Two-factor authentication is one essential and easy-to-configure measure that adds a significant barrier for would-be cybercriminals.

Consider an Air Gap for Highly Sensitive Data
A plethora of security tools and data protection systems are on the market today, many of which are highly effective. But for data that needs an extra layer of protection, consider adding an air gap. This means your data is not connected to the internet or a remote server of any kind. A real-world example would be storing your most sensitive financial data on a hard drive and locking it in a safe. Your most important data is immune from remote attacks, which is where most cybersecurity issues occur. Short of a “Mission: Impossible”-style data heist, your information is kept secure.

Of course, there are downsides to this method. It is certainly less convenient, and access is not on-demand. It also means that if the physical media is destroyed, your data is, too. One best practice is to create several copies in different secure locations.

Create Data Backups Early and Often
Often, cyberattacks go hand in hand with data loss. Without backups of important files and applications, recovering can be painful — both from a time-cost and financial perspective. When it comes to data backups, there is no such thing as too early or too often. While this step will not protect you from an attack, it will undoubtedly make rebounding from one much faster and easier.

Educate Employees About Cybersecurity Risks
It is a painful reality that 95% of cyberattacks occur because of human error, according to a recent study by the World Economic Forum. Often the easiest cyberattack vector for criminals is through phishing. By disguising emails as coming from internal sources, sending links or files that contain malware, and even calling and tricking employees to reveal sensitive data, cyber attackers can access sensitive information and get their hands on passwords and other important data. For these reasons, it is essential to educate your teams on how best to identify and report cyberattacking attempts to thwart them before they impact your business.

Hire Hackers to Stress-Test Systems
By hiring computer scientists with knowledge and even experience in hacking systems, you can help identify potential vulnerabilities in servers, applications, and websites before cybercriminals discover them. The key here is hiring ethical hackers who do these sorts of activities as their profession. Utilizing these professionals to hunt for threats and conduct pe*******on testing is a meaningful proactive step toward protecting enterprise systems.

Like so many things, when it comes to cyberattacks, hindsight is always 20/20. Taking steps now can better position your company to withstand cyberattacks, including data breaches and ransomware that can impact your ability to conduct business and serve your customers.

MAPS
Apple Maps in iOS 9 adds public transit, local business search

Apple on Monday announced an update to Maps that include access to public transit directions, enhanced location detail, and the ability to discover nearby business and other points of interest.

Speaking from the stage at this year's Worldwide Developer Conference, senior vice-president Craig Federighi mentioned that Maps will soon provide dedicated maps and directions for public transit systems in a number of cities like San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, London, Paris, and over 300 locations in China. The company has gone as far as incorporating detailed surveys of individual subway stations into its data--a feature that makes the directions provided by Maps more accurate and timely.

Maps is also getting more local with the ability to search for businesses near a specific location. Search results include a wealth of details, including photos, directions, and even an icon indicating whether a particular store supports Apple Pay.

The new Maps updates will find their way into iOS 9 and OSX 10.11, which the company plans to release later this year.

Google increased privacy controls for users and rolled out a website on Monday that answers frequently asked questions in response to increasing concern over how the search giant collects and uses its massive amounts of data.

Users have been able to control certain privacy settings for months or years, such as whether to save web browser and location history, which is also used in targeted advertising.

But managing the controls is confusing and time consuming because the settings are in various places across the web that are not always easy to find.

Now users will be able to use My Account, which provides a privacy checkup and security checkup, or lists where people can check off which data they want to be public and private.

Google's new website answers frequently asked questions, such as whether the company sells personal data and what information is given to advertisers.

"We knew that users find privacy and security really mysterious so we wanted to make it very approachable," said Guemmy Kim, product manager for account controls and settings.

Data control has become increasingly important to users in recent years as more day-to-day activity has moved to the Internet.

In 2013, Edward Snowden leaked classified documents that showed the U.S. National Security Agency was engaging in mass collection of phone records, placing companies that have enormous amounts of data, such as Google, Facebook and Apple, under increasing scrutiny.

Only 9 percent of people in a recent Pew survey felt they had a "lot" of control over their data.

Monday's rollout comes on the heels of newly increased app permissions for Android, which Google announced at its annual developer’s conference last week. The new system mirrors the app permissions on Apple's iPhones, which do not allow apps to automatically access numerous types of data, such as location or phone contacts.

REUTERS - Instagram said on Tuesday that it is taking steps to make its ads available to all types of businesses, not just hand-selected brands.

Starting in June, Instagram this year is rolling out to advertisers the ability to more closely direct campaigns by zip code and other data sets like interests in the same ways that brands can target consumers on its parent company Facebook Inc.

In addition it will let advertisers link to external websites or app stores with buttons such as "shop now," "sign up," "learn more," and "install now."

Currently, it works closely with only a handful of brands like Levi's, Banana Republic and Ben & Jerry's. Ads can only be targeted by gender, age and country.

"The quality of the ad experience remains a very important point of differentiation for us," Instagram's global head of business and brand development James Quarles said in an interview.

The move to widen and sharpen the ad platform is a significant one for the popular mobile photo app that has more than 200 million daily active users across the world. It has carefully allowed advertising on its platform starting a year and a half ago. Facebook acquired Instagram for $1 billion in 2012.

Quarles added that making ads more relevant and delivering them to the right target is the next stage of development.

Still, by opening up to all advertisers, including hundreds of thousands of small businesses, Instagram risks losing quality control of campaigns and potentially irking users.

"People are used to seeing beautiful brand imagery in their feeds," said Debra Aho Williamson, principal analyst at eMarketer. "Now they will see some direct response ads and we all know the baggage that comes with that."

Still, Williamson expects a "strong ramp-up" from advertisers long eager to do more with the platform.

Facebook does not break out Instagram revenue but Pivotal Research estimates it is in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Kfir Gavrieli, co-founder and CEO of Tieks, an online-only retailer known for its ballet flats, said it's currently "clumsy and awkward" for an Instagram user to get from a post to a landing page.

"The shop now button," he said, "will be much more seamless."

The Public Relations Manager of Huawei Technologies, Mr Kevin Li, said on Sunday that the efforts of Huawei to encourage localisation of technology in Nigeria was beginning to pay off.

Disclosing this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, Li said that the policy which Huawei had been implementing alongside business partners, had been a success.

He said localisation was one important strategy of Huawei which it was glad to execute through more cooperation with Nigerian business partners.

He also said that the company was involved in continuous local recruitment.

He said technology transfer was another Huawei's core strategy which compelled its Nigerian workers to share the same platform with their counterparts in 170 countries to work, learn and improve themselves.

"Localisation of technology has been an integral part of Huawei's policy in Nigeria hence excellent staff members had been chosen to participate in various training programmes in Huawei headquarters in China."

According to Li, Huawei also undertakes the training of personnel other than its own as it considers such contribution to be vital to the country's overall development.

We have introduced Information and communication Scholarship in Africa University of Science and Technology in Abuja besides the Huawei Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) scholarship in University of Lagos.

We also have the 1,000 girls training programme with Ministry of Communication Technology to encourage female participation in ICT industry.

He said that the girls had since been absorbed into the system and were already making significant contributions in the ICT industry in the country.

He said Huawei had plans to be more proactive in 2015 and would expand its co-operation with Nigerian business partners to achieve its objectives.
