YOU AND THE UNTAPPED DIGITAL SKILLS
Could This Report Be The Definitive Answer To THE UNTAPPED BUSINESS/DIGITAL SKILLS?
This write-up is for intelligent students, unemployed youths, and business-oriented individuals.
Before I proceed, please permit me to say that this post is not for everybody because there is no way it will make sense to everyone reading it.
Whether it makes sense to you or not, that's completely fine.
If you're a Nigerian schooling in Nigeria, especially in a government tertiary institution, you should consider having a plan B.
Many students got admission into their various tertiary institutions hoping that they would graduate within four or five years depending on their course of studies. But today, most of these students have started counting extra years due to yet to be reconciled issues between the Federal Government and the ASUU.
The unfortunate part of this bad experience is that despite the delay and extra years they are forced to spend in their schools, there is no guarantee that they will get job opportunities after graduation. Meaning most of these students would end up job hunting after their graduation without any assurance of getting any job except for the few amongst them who have connections or know someone.
What am I trying to say in essence? We all know the reality on the ground regarding the situation in this nation. So it has become imperative or significant for everyone to think outside the box or look for an escape route.
If you're a student reading this or someone who is not satisfied with his/her career, or you are unemployed, or you are not sure of the sustainability or viability of your current job, or you want to diversify, this may help you.
Try and make sure you learn a skill. If you're someone who loves digital skills, go for it without any compromise or hesitation because the clock is ticking faster than we could imagine.
If I had known this or read something like this some years ago, I would have gone far compared to where I'm currently.
The idea of learning digital skills came to my understanding in 2017, but I'm not still happy that I didn't get to know about it earlier than that.
When Mark Zuckerberg was building Facebook in 2004, I didn't know what life was about then, and he is just a few years older than me.
Even though I have acquired some digital skills and doing well in them, I still feel I would have gone beyond this level if I had known earlier.
But it's never too late.
Let nobody deceive you; the real money is made over the internet. Forget about internet fraudsters popularly known as YAHOO-YAHOO boys. They are just living in their temporary-luxurious or exotic lifestyles that won't take them anywhere except in prison by the time they are caught.
If you have digital skills and the know-how to sell (market yourself), you can't complain about the lack of unemployment.
Let me shock you with this in case you are yet to know; in the next few years, the digital world will take over the control of how wealth is made.
When Aliko Dangote started his Dangote group of company, Mark Zuckerberg (the owner of Facebook, which is now metaverse) was yet to be born. But if you look at it today, Mark has amassed an insane net worth of 71.2 billion dollars, while Aliko Dangote's estimated net worth is 15 billion dollars as of May 16, 2022. Source: Forbes.
What am I saying in essence? You may not be able to square up with this Tech Giant who has been raking in billions of dollars over the years, but with your limited capacity, you can sit down, take your time and think about where you should start from. There are great and many opportunities waiting for you to grab them if you so wish, so start thinking like a good businessman or woman even if you don't have one yet.
I know you might be wondering where you should start.
Of course, I know everybody can't learn digital skills because they don't have a passion for it. If you are in this category, you can go to any craft centre and start learning something new. My only adverse for you is that you should not go and learn a craft that will become obsolete in the next few years; do your research.
If you want to learn a digital skill (s), there are many options that you can choose from, but there are many things you should also put into consideration before you opt-in for any of them.
Like many other businesses, careers or jobs even products and services, some are more in demand than others. No matter how easy or difficult it's, learning a digital skill that is not in demand is unwise.
Permit me to digress a little bit before I continue.
Let me give you some hints: did you know that some of these Nigerian skits makers are millionaires?
Did you know that Facebook is paying them?
Did you know that many content creators on YouTube are making money?
For the sake of those that don't know how it works, let me explain a little bit:
Have you ever observed that when you're watching a video on Facebook or YouTube before or in the middle of the video, you see short video ads or text that starts displaying for a few seconds before you can continue watching the video? That's a display ad. The owners of those videos that the short video ads are displayed on are monetizing the videos.
Facebook and Google (YouTube) are paying the owners for displaying those short video ads on their videos.
Many YouTube content creators are earning millions of naira every week as you're reading this now. If you think I'm lying, I have an assignment for you.
Install a browser extension called social Blade if you've got a PC. Go to any YouTube channel with many subscribers, click on the social blade extension you installed on your chrome browser, and see how much that person is earning per month. Convert the amount in dollars to 595 naira, and you will see how much they are making per month, then divide it by 4.
Of course, this is only applied to content creators with many subscribers. But other content creators (including me) on YouTube are also earning some money according to our subscribers and users' engagements.
Sorry for the digression. Let's come back to the topic.
If you learn a digital skill that is not in demand, you only waste your time because if there is no demand, there is no supply.
Before I talk about digital skills you can learn, let me quickly talk about a business not model that you can also venture into if you don't like learning digital skills.
What is it?
Mini-importation business. You probably must have heard about mini-importation business before, but you may not know how many Nigerian businessmen/women are making millions of naira.
Let me shock you with this; most of the bags, shoes, gowns, shirts, electronics, etc., that you usually buy from those people, in most cases, they are selling to you twice the amount they purchased them, including logistics fees from oversea.
What comes to your money when you hear mini-importation business? Rich men/women's business, right? That's not true. I thought the same thing until the hidden secret was revealed to me some years ago.
It may shock you that you can start a mini-importation business for as low as N20,000. It's only that, just like other businesses, your starting capital-up determines your profit margin.
Sometimes I wonder when people come to a forum and say they have money but don't know what business they can start. I don't blame them because you can't leverage on sometimes you don't know.
What am I saying? At this point in our lives, nobody should be blaming unemployment. I stopped complaining a long time ago.
Let's go further.
As for those who love learning digital skills, I would recommend some digital skills.
Here is the list of digital skills you can learn that you'll forever be happy that you learned:
Programming: all the apps we use and the social media platforms we belong to today were built with the help of programming. To become a good programmer, you need to prepare well and dedicate enough time. You can't be a good programmer and be jobless, except you don't know what you're doing. If you can go through the "pain," you live in the gain.
Programming is a broad keyword just like we have many departments under a particular faculty in our schools:
For instance, under programming, we have:
Data science
Software engineering
Data analytics – I'm learning this one currently
Machine learning
Artificial intelligent (Ai)
Programmers can also be called developers. We have back and front-end developers. If you're both a back-end and front-end developer, you're regarded as a full-stack developer
Digital marketing: in simple terms, digital marketing uses various channels or tools to promote products and services. Before you can call yourself a digital marketer, you need to have some of the following skills: Search engine optimization (SEO), Email marketing, Social media marketing, Copy-writing, Google Ads, Facebook Ads campaigns, and the knowledge of other search and display Ads.
Data science
Data analytics
Machine learning
Artificial intelligent (AI)
Affiliate marketing
Freelancing
Affiliate marketing
Mini-importation business
Can I teach all these skills? Unfortunately, I'm only good at a few of these digital skills. I'm good at some of these digital skills, and to the glory of God, I'm not regretting ever learning them. Mind you, you don't need to know more than one skill before you can build a career for yourself. Learning more than one of these skills is just my personal preference.
Here are the digital skills I know that I'm good at that I'm currently teaching my students:
Digital marketing
Freelancing – to become a freelance, you need to have digital skills to offer.
Affiliate marketing
Mini-importation business – this is not a digital skill anyway, but you can digitally learn it and start a business from it.
Of course, the last one is not a digital skill. If you don't have the time to learn any digital skills but want an alternative way of having and running your business, you should consider learning mini-importation business. You can learn this one within a few days, and it's one of the courses I teach my students.
Currently, I'm learning data analysis/analytics, but I don't have the required skill to start teaching people for now until I've mastered it. You can start learning if it's something you think you should acquire as a skill.
As a data analyst, you need to be good at the following:
SQL (SEQUEL), Tableau or Power BI, and maybe a bit of Python and Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet.
A data analyst in the USA earns around 80,000 dollars annually. That's over 47 million per year and 3.9 million naira per month.
I know you may be thinking this does not apply to you since you're not living in the united
States. That's where thinking outside the box comes in.
The world has gone beyond what we can imagine.
Some of the skills I listed above are in high demand. There are many opportunities for you if you're good at it.
Did you know that you can work for companies in other countries remotely? For some people that love to leave Nigeria, many companies in the US and other countries wouldn't mind preparing everything you need to move to their countries. While some of these companies would love to have you working with them physically, some would accept you to work remotely for them.
If you think it's a lie, try and get the skill first and get back to me. I'll be happy to help you. If you already have the skill, get in touch with me.
To wrap it up, it's not too late for you to get started, and there is no time to get started than now that you're reading this.
My humble advice is don't go into any of these if you don't have a passion for it or don't see the need to go into it.
