Colds (with symptoms of blocked nose) in children don’t usually have serious complications but they can cause stress and worry in parents and caregivers. It’s understandable that you might want to give your child medicine to treat a cold. But most children will get better on their own.

Nasal decongestants help to relieve a blocked nose. It reduces the size of the blood vessels in the nose and sinuses helping you to breathe more easily. For children under age 12, decongestants might ease the common cold symptoms of a blocked or running nose, but these medications may not be safe for this age group. It can have serious side effects, such as slowed breathing, which can be life-threatening

Ways to treat Cold in Infants
- A cool mist humidifier (this makes breathing easier by decreasing congestion in nasal passages)

- Acetaminophen or ibuprofen (can be used to reduce fever, aches, and pain)

- Encourage children to drink plenty of liquids to stay hydrated.

Please speak to your doctor or pharmacist for any other concerns you have

Decongestants are a type of medicine that can provide short-term relief for a blocked or stuffy nose (nasal congestion). They can help ease the symptoms of conditions such as colds and flu, catarrh, sinusitis, hay fever and other allergic reactions

Oxymetazoline is in a class of medications called nasal decongestants. It works by narrowing the blood vessels in the nasal passages. It comes as a solution (liquid) to spray into the nose. It is usually used every 10 to 12 hours as needed, but not more often than twice in a 24-hour period.

Follow the directions on the package label or on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand.

If you use oxymetazoline nasal spray longer than the recommended period of time, your congestion may get worse or may improve but come back. This side effect of nasal decongestant sprays is called rebound congestion.

In general, do not use oxymetazoline nasal spray for longer than 3 days. If your symptoms do not get better after 3 days of treatment, stop using oxymetazoline and call your doctor.

Smoking ci******es do not only damage your lungs and throat, it also affects your sinuses.

Sinuses are air-filled pockets, that are near the nose passage. Mucus is produced in the sinus to clean out bacteria and other particles from the air you breathe.

In the sinuses we have tiny hair-like structures, that clean the nose, sinuses, and lungs of airborne particulate matter, bacteria, and mucus. These are called "cilia"

Smoking causes the cilia to stop working, which increases the chances of lungs and sinus infections.

If you continue to smoke when you have a sinus infection, you are more likely to develop chronic sinusitis.

Garlic contains a substance called allicin, which is believed to have antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties. It helps in killing the bacteria and also eliminates the germs that cause pain and irritation in your throat. Raw garlic cloves should be chewed or sucked on, as cooking them destroys the allicin.

Other than causing an unpleasant odour in your breath, there is likely no great danger in trying this home remedy to treat your sore throat.

GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) is a digestive disease in which stomach acid or bile flows into the food pipe and irritates the food pipe lining. Acid reflux and heartburn more than twice a week may indicate GERD.

Not everyone with GERD has heartburn, but the primary symptoms of GERD are heartburn, regurgitation, and an acid taste in the mouth.

Acid reflux can cause a sore throat, though heartburn is the most common symptom. If acid reflux gets past the upper esophageal sphincter, it can enter the throat (pharynx) and even the voice box (larynx), causing hoarseness or sore throat. When a sore throat stems from acid reflux, a person may also feel as if they have a lump in their throat.

Sore throat can be caused by bacterial or viral infections, allergies or irritants, acid reflux, vocal overuse and strain, or even sleeping with your mouth open for too long.

Depending on what’s causing your sore throat, you can often relieve the pain and irritation by drinking warm liquids or taking throat lozenges. Some sore throats usually clear up on their own after a few days of rest. In cases of a bacteria-caused sore throat, a doctor-prescribed antibiotics can help kill the bacteria.

Increase the total amount of fluids you drink, drink warm fluids, such as hot tea with lemon or broth. This keeps you hydrated and prevents your throat from getting dry. You can also gargle with salt water (1/4 teaspoon of salt per cup of water).
