SIAN - Week 4: Protecting your identity

Every post, photo, comment, email, and account contributes to your digital identity.

It represents how you appear online and how others, including attackers, can gather information about you.

Many people focus on protecting passwords but overlook the amount of personal information they publicly share every day.

Protecting your digital identity means being intentional about what you reveal online.

Awareness is protection.
Security in a nutshell.

Phi v0.6.0 is now available

We just shipped full Go modules support, making Phi a true multi-language supply chain security tool for modern development teams.

What’s new:
Complete support for Go modules (go.mod + go.work)
Automatic project detection (npm or Go)
Same powerful install-time scanning engine now works across both ecosystems
19 detectors + OSV integration
Unified phi.lock as your trusted audit record
Full support for phi install, phi ci, phi audit, and phi x

Why this matters:
Supply chain attacks on both npm and Go modules continue to rise. Most traditional tools still scan after packages are downloaded and extracted.Phi scans everything in memory before any code touches disk; blocking malicious packages, typosquats, and suspicious behaviors early, with lifecycle scripts disabled by default.

Whether you're building in Node.js or Go, you now have consistent, strong supply chain protection with one tool

Most online threats do not begin with advanced attacks.

They begin with simple moments; clicking the wrong link, joining the wrong network, or downloading the wrong file.
Safe browsing is not about fear.

It is about awareness and responsible habits.
The internet is powerful, but caution must come with access.

SIAN Week 3: SAFE BROWSING

Are You Browsing on Autopilot?

Every day, we click links, join Wi-Fi networks, and download files without even thinking about it. We’re so used to being online that we sometimes forget it’s not always a safe neighborhood place

Safe browsing is not just for experts alone, it's for everyone. It just means being more careful so your private information doesn't end up in the wrong hands.

Not every website is your friend. Just because it looks nice and sometimes credible; doesn't mean it's safe.
Public Wi-Fi is like a public park. Everyone can see what you’re doing if you aren't careful.
And most of all, be careful with ads you click everyday; some contain malicious contents.

Cybersecurity starts with you. By taking a second to think before you click, you can stop scams and keep your data safe.

Stay safe out there!

Phishing attacks succeed when awareness is low.

By understanding how they work, recognizing common signs, and slowing down before responding, you significantly reduce your risk.

Security does not always require complex tools.
Often, it begins with simple awareness.

How to Spot a Phishing Attempt

Phishing attacks are designed to trick you, but there are warning signs you can learn to recognize.
• Look closely at the sender’s email
Scammers often use addresses that look similar to real ones but have small changes.
• Check links before you click
Hover over links to see where they really lead. If it looks suspicious, do not click.
• Watch for poor spelling or strange formatting
Many phishing messages contain errors or awkward wording that legitimate companies usually avoid.
• Be cautious with urgent messages
If you are being pressured to act quickly, it is a red flag. Scammers rely on panic to make you react without thinking.
• Never share sensitive information through email
Passwords, bank details, and verification codes should not be requested this way.

Legitimate organizations will not rush or pressure you into making decisions.

Take a moment to pause.
Verify the request through official channels.
Awareness is your first line of defense.

SIAN Week 2: PHISHING

Phishing is when attackers trick you into revealing sensitive information.

Phishing is one of the most common cyber threats today.
It happens when attackers pretend to be trusted organizations and ask you to share sensitive information such as passwords, bank details, or verification codes.

These messages often look legitimate and create urgency to make you act quickly.
Understanding phishing is the first step to avoiding it.

SIAN Week 1 Reflection

Are Your Accounts Really Secure?
You made it through Week 1. Before we move forward, take a moment to actually think about what we covered this week, not just read through it.

Password hygiene is one of those topics that sounds simple on the surface. Most people hear it and assume they are already doing enough. The reality is that most are not, and the gap between thinking you are secure and actually being secure is where most breaches happen.

Let's be honest with ourselves for a moment.
Do you reuse passwords? If the answer is yes, even for accounts you consider unimportant, you are taking a real risk. Attackers use a method called credential stuffing where they take login details exposed in one breach and automatically try them across dozens of other platforms. One leaked password from an old shopping account can open the door to your email or your bank.

Are your important accounts actually protected? Not just passworded, but protected. Email, banking, work tools, and cloud storage are high value targets. If the password on any of those is something you have used before, or something easy to remember because it is based on your name or birthday, it needs to change.
Have you turned on multi-factor authentication? This is one of the simplest things you can do and one of the most effective. Even if someone gets hold of your password, they still cannot get in without that second confirmation step. It is not perfect but it removes the majority of the risk immediately.

Three things worth doing before next week.
Go back to your most important account and ask yourself honestly whether that password is strong and unique. If it is not, change it today. Enable multi-factor authentication on your email and your banking app if you have not already. And if you are storing passwords somewhere, make sure it is in a proper password manager, not a notes app or a sticky note.

Security is not about being a tech expert. It is about building habits that make you a harder target. That is all this comes down to.
Next week on SIAN we look at another everyday digital risk, one that catches people off guard regardless of how careful they think they are.

Stay aware. Stay protected.
