Trump: Iran agrees to abandon nuclear weapons, joint Hormuz control

U.S. President Donald Trump stated on the 23rd that he is conducting negotiations with Iran and has reached agreements on “almost all points,” including Iran’s “abandonment of nuclear weapons.” Trump made these remarks before boarding his dedicated aircraft to Memphis, Tennessee, at West Palm Beach International Airport in Florida, where he met with reporters and said, “We have conducted very in-depth discussions” and “We are in the midst of the negotiation process.” However, Iran has claimed through its foreign ministry spokesperson and semi-official media that “there have been no negotiations or discussions with the U.S.,” so it remains to be seen whether an agreement will be reached. The outcome of the negotiations is expected to be a turning point in determining whether diplomatic resolution or escalation will occur.

Trump stated that his Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, his son-in-law Jared Kushner, and others conducted negotiations with Iran’s top officials until the day before, saying, “Those discussions proceeded perfectly.” He added, “We will likely hold consultations by phone today,” and “Iran wants to reach an agreement, and so do we.” Trump claimed that agreements have been reached on 15 issues, asserting, “They will not possess nuclear weapons,” and “That is the first point, and they have agreed to it.” Regarding the highly enriched uranium reportedly stockpiled by Iran, he said, “Once the agreement is finalized, we will go there directly and bring it back.” Trump stated, “I cannot guarantee it 100%, but if it happens, it will be the biggest deal of my life.”

Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, which has emerged as a turning point in military operations against Iran, Trump said it will soon be opened, leading to a decrease in oil prices. He suggested the possibility of joint management, saying, “It could be jointly controlled” and “Perhaps I and the Ayatollah (Iran’s supreme leader) can work together.” Earlier, on the 21st, Trump warned on his social media ‘Truth Social’ that if Iran does not open the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours, he would “raze the power plants,” and Iran’s announcement of stronger retaliation heightened concerns of escalation. However, as Trump postponed the attack on power plants for five days and officially announced negotiations with Iran for the first time, there is a possibility that the situation with Iran could shift to a negotiation phase.

However, Trump stated that the counterpart the U.S. government is currently negotiating with is not Mojtaba, who was elected as the supreme leader after the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He said, “We have essentially removed the first, second, and third echelons of leadership,” and “The people we are dealing with now are very rational and respectable.” In this regard, Axios reported that the U.S. negotiation team held discussions with Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the speaker of Iran’s parliament. Ghalibaf is known as a close associate of Mojtaba, having served as a general in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and mayor of the capital, Tehran. However, he dismissed this on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “There have been no negotiations with the U.S.,” and called it “fake news.” Trump also mentioned the case of Venezuela, where a temporary pro-U.S. government was established after the ousting of President Nicolás Maduro, saying, “(In Iran) we will probably be able to find such a person.”

At an event in Memphis, Tennessee, Trump said, “We have given them five days, and we will monitor the situation afterward,” and “I believe there is a very high possibility of reaching an agreement in the end.” Regarding Iran’s attitude, he said, “Because our military has performed admirably (in operations), they are serious this time.” Meanwhile, Vice President J D Vance reportedly discussed the situation regarding the start of negotiations and agreements for ending the war with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a phone call. In a video message, Netanyahu said, “We will defend our core interests under any circumstances.” Military clashes between the U.S. and Iran continue. CENTCOM stated, “The U.S. military continues to strongly strike Iranian military targets using precision-guided weapons.”

One killed in Israeli strike on Iran-Hezbollah operative in Hazmieh apartment

An Israeli strike on Hazmieh east of Beirut killed at least one person, Lebanon's health ministry said, the second strike on the residential Christian area in the ongoing Israel-Hezbollah war.

The Israeli military said around the same time that it had "struck an IRGC Quds Force terrorist in Beirut", referring to the foreign operations arm of Iran's Revolutionary Guards.

Media reports have identified the man as Quds Force member Mohammad Ali Kourani.

Hazmieh, which is near Lebanon's presidential palace, hosts several foreign embassies.

Release Nnamdi Kanu: IPOB Stages Protest in UK During Tinubu’s State Visit

Supporters of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) held a large-scale demonstration across central London on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, coinciding with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu’s historic two-day state visit to the United Kingdom.

The protest, organized by the IPOB UK chapter and described as a “mega protest,” ran from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Demonstrators gathered at symbolic locations including Parliament Square, 10 Downing Street, the Commonwealth Office, and the Nigerian High Commission.Nigeria news updates

Carrying placards reading “Free Mazi Nnamdi Kanu” and “Release MNK Now,” many participants wore red caps and waved Biafran flags, a horizontal tricolour of red, black, and green featuring a golden rising sun in the centre.

The group demanded the immediate and unconditional release of their detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in Nigerian custody since his 2021 extradition from Kenya.

Additional calls included a referendum on Biafran self-determination, an end to what they described as bad governance in Nigeria, and strong opposition to any royal honours or reception for President Tinubu during his visit, hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle.

In circulating video footage from the event, one protester declared: “Our message is very clear: Tinubu does not deserve a royal salute. That is our stand today, being the 18th of March.” Other clips featured chants and statements labelling the president as undeserving of royal recognition, amid accusations of presiding over repression and injustice.

The demonstration was billed as peaceful, with organizers inviting “all lovers of freedom, justice, and human rights” to participate. It highlighted ongoing frustrations within pro-Biafra circles over Kanu’s detention, despite court rulings and international advocacy for his release.

President Tinubu’s visit marks the first Nigerian state visit to the UK in 37 years and aims to strengthen bilateral ties, economic diplomacy, and cooperation.

Kanu still detained because he rejected Tinubu’s terms accepted by Igboho — Sowore

Former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has claimed that the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu is largely due to the separatist leader’s refusal to accept certain conditions allegedly accepted by Sunday Igboho.

Sowore made the remarks while comparing the political approaches of the two separatist figures and their relationship with the Nigerian government led by Bola Tinubu.

According to him: “Nnamdi Kanu is in jail today because he’s different from Sunday Igboho. If Kanu were like Sunday Igboho, he would be campaigning for President Tinubu in the Southeast now.

“Because it’s the same terms they gave to Igboho that he accepted and Kanu rejected over the last 10 years.”

Sowore said his recent interaction with Kanu reinforced his belief that the two men could not be compared.

“I don’t know what he will do tomorrow, but the Kanu I went to campaign for in Aba last week—it will be heresy to compare the two of them,” he said.

He further criticized what he described as a pattern of transactional politics in parts of the country.

“As per Igboho, who I don’t know too well, I have always stated that their own brand of politics is what I call Amala politics in Oyo State; it’s politics of ‘chop I chop.’”

Sowore also warned that Igboho could end up politically disgraced, drawing parallels with controversial political figures of the past.

“But what Igboho is going to realize is that he’s going to be in the hall of infamy like the Nzeribes of this world, who once said if Babangida does not become president he would kill himself; both him and IBB have become invalid.

“It’s like Daniel Kanu, who said if Abacha does not become president he would kill himself. Abacha has died and his own political career died forever.”

He added that the agitator risks damaging his legacy if he continues on the same path.

“If he was ever relevant, Igboho just retired himself into the infamy of the people I mentioned, and his own might be worse because the world community might be coming for him very soon,” Sowore said.

Nnamdi Kanu Must Spend Easter With Us – Omoyele Sowore Declares

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has called for the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) ahead of the Easter celebrations.

He stated this on Thursday in Aba during the free Nnamdi Kanu 1 Million protest.

Addressing a crowd of protesters that gathered to welcome him to Aba, he condemned the deployment of a large number of soldiers and other security men.

He said that the strong military presence should have been deployed to states that are facing serious attacks from Boko Haram and Lakuwara terrorists.

According to the human rights activist, he was not the organiser of the Aba protest, but explained that his presence was because of his belief in justice and equity for Kanu.

He described Nnamdi Kanu as a leader, brother and father who should be freed.

“We are not the organizers of this protest but we said we must come to this city and announce the freedom of our brother, our father and leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“Am only for justice, I don’t care if you are Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa. Nigeria can not thrive when one tribe is treated differently from the other.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu must spend Easter with us; he has suffered enough”, Sowore said.

It was gathered that the crowd was initially dispersed by security men at Faulks road, but regrouped at Samek area of Aba, in larger number before continuing with the protest.

In Umuahia, Abia State capital, the city was peaceful and calm, as Police officers were seen inside patrol vehicles, moving around the town to maintain order.

IPOB Protest: Sowore faults large number of military presence in Aba

Human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore has faulted the deployment of a large number of soldiers and other security men in Aba on Thursday, during the free Nnamdi Kanu 1 Million protest, which he participated in.

Sowore who was addressing a crowd of protesters that gathered to welcome him to Aba, said that the strong military presence should have been deployed to states that are facing serious attacks from Boko Haram and Lakuwara terrorists.

According to the human rights activist, he was not the organizer of the Aba protest but explained that his presence is because of his belief in justice and equity for Kanu.

According to Sowore, Nnamdi Kanu should be released before Easter.

” Mazi Nnamdi Kanu must spend Easter with us, he has suffered enough” he told the Aba crowd.

It is no longer news that following the arrest and prosecution of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, prior to his conviction, several citizens organized demonstrations across parts of Nigeria calling for his release.

In every democratic society governed by the rule of law, the right of citizens to peacefully assemble and express dissent must be protected. The continued prosecution of Aloy Ejimakor, Sowore and other individuals arrested during free Nnamdi Kanu's protests raises serious concerns about fairness, legality, national stability and broader impact of these proceedings. While the government aims to enforce the law, it must also respect the constitutional rights of citizens to assemble and express dissent. For a nation striving to uphold democracy and the rule of law, it is crucial that justice does not come at the expense of fundamental rights.

It is no longer news that following the arrest and prosecution of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, prior to his conviction, several citizens organized demonstrations across parts of Nigeria calling for his release. During these protests, a number of individuals including Aloy Ejimakor, Sowore, Nnamdi Kanu's younger brother amongst others were arrested and charged with offences including unlawful assembly, public disturbance, and alleged association with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The trial risks undermining due process and could set a troubling precedent for handling peaceful protests in Nigeria. Beyond the legal implications, the trial may inflame social tensions, fueling unrest rather than fostering reconciliation, ongoing prosecutions can deepen divides and provoke unrest. The government must consider whether continued legal action aligns with national stability and the public interest.

International human rights standards caution against criminalizing peaceful demonstrations. A temporary halt would demonstrate Nigeria’s commitment to justice, human rights, and the rule of law.

The Nigerian Constitution guarantees due process, protection from arbitrary detention, and the right to peaceful protest. Any compromise on these rights not only undermines the legal system but also sets a dangerous precedent for handling dissent.

International human rights standards also underscore the importance of protecting peaceful protesters from criminalization. A temporary halt to the trial would align Nigeria with global norms, demonstrating a commitment to both justice and human rights.

Furthermore, History has shown that engaging citizens through negotiation and inclusion is often more effective than relying solely on punitive measures. If protesters were unarmed and non-violent (as in the present scenario), prosecuting them may amount to criminalizing constitutional rights.

As a legal practitioner, I call on the Nigerian government to review the ongoing prosecutions and consider a suspension of the trial. Justice is not merely about enforcing the law; it is about protecting rights, promoting peace, and ensuring that the law serves all the citizens fairly. Pausing these proceedings would not signal weakness—it would signal wisdom, fairness, and respect for the principles upon which the nation professes to stand.

Thus, a government confident in its democracy should never fear the peaceful voices of its citizens. Especially, as the strength of any democracy lies not in silencing dissent, but in protecting the rights of those who dare to speak.

The organizers, under the banner of the Coalition of Lovers of Freedom, announced plans for what they described as a “One Million March” scheduled to take place in Aba on March 12, 2026.

A coalition of pro-Biafra supporters has called for a massive protest march in Aba, Abia State, demanding the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

In a flyer circulating on social media and seen by Sahara Reporters, the organizers urged supporters across the region to converge on Aba to peacefully demand Kanu’s freedom.

The flyer reads: “1 Million March for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s Freedom – Aba – 12th March 2026.”

Biafra

It further called on supporters to mobilize in large numbers.

“This is the mother of all marches. Wherever you are, head to Aba on 12th March 2026 and march peacefully for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Come one, come all,” the message stated.

The organizers also described themselves as the Coalition of Lovers of Freedom and urged participants to rally around what they called the demand to “Free Our Leader.”

Kanu, who leads the Indigenous People of Biafra, has been in the custody of the Nigerian government since he was rearrested in 2021 and returned to the country under controversial circumstances.

His continued detention has remained a major source of agitation among his supporters, particularly in the South-East region, where calls for his release have triggered protests and sit-at-home orders in the past.

Security authorities have repeatedly warned against unlawful gatherings linked to pro-Biafra agitations, citing security concerns.

It remains unclear whether security agencies would allow the planned march in Aba or take measures to prevent it.

President Donald Trump seeks exit from Iran war

U.S. President Donald Trump stated regarding the military operation against Iran, dubbed “Epic Fury,” which began on the 28th of last month, “It will end soon,” adding, “It will end the moment I decide to end it.” Trump made this statement during a phone interview with Axios, released earlier that morning, saying, “The war is progressing very well, and we are far ahead of schedule.” The White House had presented a timeline of approximately six weeks for this operation, and as statements about achieving the intended military objectives continued, there are observations that the Trump administration has begun seeking an ‘exit.’

Trump, who had suggested the possibility of an early conclusion of the operation on the 9th, also said that day, “There are practically no targets left to attack.” “(Iran) was aiming for the rest of the Middle East,” he said. “They are paying the price for 47 years of death and destruction they have caused. This is retaliation for that, and they will not get away with it so easily.” General Brad Cooper, Commander of the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), who is directing this operation, stated through a video message earlier that morning that most of Iran’s naval forces, including four state-of-the-art Solaymani-class warships of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), have been neutralized. However, in the case of Israel, Defense Minister Katz stated, “The operation will continue as long as necessary, without being constrained by time.”

Trump, while heading to the state of Ohio from the White House in Washington, D.C., met with reporters and said, “(Iran) has lost its navy and has lost its air force,” adding, “They have no anti-aircraft defense equipment at all and no radar.” He continued, “Their leadership has disappeared, and we can make the situation in Iran much worse,” adding, “We have left specific targets designated for elimination, which we can eliminate as early as this afternoon.” When asked if he could declare ‘victory’ in the war despite the new Supreme Leader of Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei, remaining intact, Trump said, “I don’t want to comment on that.”

The White House stated on the 10th, “The military operation against Iran will end when the Supreme Commander (Trump) deems the objectives to be fully achieved,” adding, “This does not mean that Iran must explicitly declare surrender.” This stance is interpreted as taking into account the situation where rising oil prices, increasing U.S. military casualties, and domestic and international critical public opinion are adding to the burden on the administration. The backlash from the MAGA (Make America Great Again) supporters, who follow Trump but are negative about intervening in foreign affairs, is also significant. In particular, the recent sharp rise in oil prices is becoming a factor in increasing opposition to the administration within the U.S., where debates over high inflation, such as ‘affordability’ (costs manageable to bear), are already intense.
