Specific ICT-based objectives
1. To design innovative ICT-based instructional strategies that could be incorporated in the teaching and learning of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics subjects in the secondary schools in Nigeria through efficient and innovative assembly of available resources.
2. To develop knowledge among scholars through training programmes on innovative teaching strategies, research methodology and ICT in order to sustain the educational growth of all stakeholders.
3. To train graduates and undergraduates in the applied sciences, social sciences and engineering faculties in Nigerian universities to apply different application packages in research activities through workshops and seminars. Datarmatics training workshops are usually organized for the undergraduate students, unemployed graduates, postgraduate students, teachers in secondary schools, and lecturers in the tertiary institutions to mine the well packaged treasures therein. The reasons(Rs) why you should participate in our Capacity Strengthening Training (CST) workshops are discussed below. R1: Students studying mathematics/statistics, computer science and economics among others in universities in the country, at graduation are supposed to be proficient in the applications of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), Eviews, Gretl Mathlab and Simulink among other packages in research activities. But in practice, observations show that some students lack the basic skills in the use of these software packages. R2: It has become a well-known fact the students specifically in the fields of Computer Science (and Engineering) have not been able to develop the needed proficiency writing simple computer programs. This is in part due to the observed fact that instructors have not been able to keep pace with the evolving world of computer programming and partly due to the fact the students fail to acquire the fundamental knowledge. R3: Many graduates roam about in the streets in search of jobs. Some do menial jobs just to make ends meet, while only a few of them are gainfully employed. These individuals have aspirations to engage in Postgraduate Studies (PGS), become lecturers and researchers among others. The tuition fee for postgraduate education in Nigeria is becoming unbearable. Must PGS be abandoned for the rich?, the answer is NO. “No hardworking young person should be priced out of a higher education.” –President Obama. Therefore, unemployed graduates should be empowered to be gainfully employed or be self-reliant. R4: Experience has shown that many research postgraduate students abandon their PGS at thesis-phase for delay in its submission or the universities terminate their PGS for unnecessary delays since every programme has tolerable duration. The above problems could be associated with the postgraduate student dependence on the hardly available supervisors, little knowledge of research methodology and the huge amount of school fees that accrues over the years of non submission of the thesis among others. Addressing the 2013/2014 research students, the Dean of the Postgraduate School, University of Uyo, Prof. Joseph Obinaju, restated the institution’s commitment to ensuring graduation on record time…and noted that student’s ability to graduate largely depends on such individual’s commitment to the programme. R5: Since 2008, Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) made computer education one of the core subjects in the senior secondary school curriculum in Nigeria. The basic ICT knowledge of teachers toward its implementation is questionable. Factors affecting the use of ICT in the secondary schools include lack of technical experts, population explosion and lack of professional training among others. The issue of professional training is paramount in the steps to incorporate ICT in education but it is not at the reach of all. R6: Some lecturers in tertiary institutions fail to conduct empirical studies due to poor knowledge of research data analysis and computer software applications. This category of teachers concentrate on opinion papers that add less to the educational community. Professor L.O Adetula (FMAN) indicated that a true and competent lecturer in a tertiary institution should be able to gather relevant school information (data) that can be used for research to improve teaching, learning, curriculum and the school environment. He further stated that a research oriented lecturer is very beneficial to the educational community; and that lecturers in tertiary institution should be well versed in educational statistics and also be ICT compliant. Educational statistics is a powerful tool the researcher needs. However, for the researcher to be successful in the use of these tools, he must be able to justify the use of a particular statistical test, the underlying assumptions behind that test, and if violated what to do. Based on the above stated reasons Datarmatics organizes capacity strengthening training workshop on Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI), Research methodology and Data analytics using softwares such as SPSS, E-views, Mathematica, Mathlab, Simulink, Gratl, Scratch, GraphPad, Catia, Ansys, Hypermesh, StarCom, Flowmaster, and Math tools among other packages. Our workshops are based on the Learning While Doing (LWD) approach. We have a team of professionals, trained in reputable universities across the globe. Email: [email protected]
