Did you know that 97% of the 13 million bicycles assembled in Europe last year were made with bicycle frames imported from outside the European Union? In 20 years time the bicycle manufacturing industry has disappeared almost completely from Europe. Besides some manufacturers of bicycle components the vast majority of European bicycle manufactures have either relocated their production to Southeas

t Asia or ceased to exist. The reason was simple: we just couldn’t compete with the cheap labour countries like Taiwan and China. Sure, if you are interested in making money and don't care too much about quality. At Mokumono we think that dragging all those frames half way across the earth is unnecessary and extremely wasteful. Above all, we believe that it is a shame that our rich history of bicycle manufacturing just ends here. A few years ago we started the process to reinvent the way a bicycle frame is produced. We wanted to make it suitable for the 21ste century and we succeeded, inspired by the European car industry. Cars are still produced in Europe because of constant innovating and automating production processes. We took the lessons learned here and applied them to the production of bicycle frames. Soon (November 2017) the production of the Mokumono Delta will start and we'll be one-step closer in reaching our goal: bring bicycle manufacturing back to The Netherlands.

Maintenance probably isn’t top of mind when you’ve just bought a Polder but it plays an important role in keeping your bike running smoothly for years to come.

We recommend a full service every 3.000 km, or at least once a year, to keep your bike in top condition. Small issues can often be spotted and solved early by our mechanics, before they turn into problems at the worst possible moment.

You can easily schedule a service appointment via our website at our workshop in Amsterdam. On the day of your appointment, we service your bike right away, so you won’t be without it for long.

And the best part? After that, we probably won’t see you again for another 3.000 smooth-sailing kilometers.

Man and machine.

From the very beginning, we set out to produce our frames in the Netherlands instead of outsourcing to Asia, still the industry standard in bicycle manufacturing. We want to prove that local production is possible.

Competing with low-cost labour means finding smarter and more efficient ways to manufacture. Automated welding robots help us do exactly that, delivering consistency and productivity at scale.

But human craftsmanship remains essential. Many parts of the process still rely on skilled hands and trained eyes. It’s this balance between technology and craftsmanship that allows us to keep production close to home.
