“A little update on the progress of the book and what the artist has been doing.
Monstrosity as A Feminist Act and Female Folklore and Legends.
During my current residency period in Tangier, my research and practice have been moving towards legends, and mythological female folklore in Moroccan culture, and anthropological studies of Gnawa Culture.
On arrival, when talking about my previous work on monstrosity as feminist action, I was told of Lalla Aicha, a powerful, well-known, yet very evasive figure in Moroccan culture. I decided, together with the Darna organisation, to start work on a giant marionette for an upcoming parade in the city.
I wanted to portray her right, so I went on a journey to find answers through the culture and people. I have interviewed Moroccans of all ages, and each has a different tale to tell. I have spoken to Gnawa Maalems, travelled to sacred sites and listened to spirit music. I have found myself at Gnawa rituals in the middle of the night, watching people become possessed by her.
Lalla Aicha and the stories told of her have become part of me, my life and my time here. I have put together this process in a film: Searching For Lalla Aicha.
What I have learned about Lalla Aicha is that she is not one thing. Lalla Aicha is interwoven throughout all of Morocco, taking many forms. I think Lalla Aicha reflects the strength of women throughout history and is a powerful character to inspire and enchant many generations.
Together with Abdelghani Bouzian, the children and staff at the Darna Farm, and other students of IMAE, I have made a marionette of Lalla Aicha. We brought her out on the streets of Tangier for a parade, and seeing her come to life in Tangier, the city I love, was one of the proudest moments of my life.
This artistic collaboration was undertaken with great love. She is our own, and I hope she will bring happiness and joy to the people and streets of Tangier for many years to come.
Next week I will return to NL, and continue preparations for the book, with this new chapter included.”
