Details from another illustration I'm working on for a set of publications on the training of specialists in robot assisted surgery. The illustration is based on the actual Da Vinci Surgical System from that was used by the concerning hospitals. Do visit their webpage to have a closer look at these truly magnificent machines!

Cover illustration for a doctoral thesis.

The contents cover a range of topics related to E health in bariatric surgery (a collection of surgical interventions such as gastric bypass that can help an individual with weight-loss).

The cover shows a stomach and duodenum made up of ones and zeros to illustrate the focus on digital interventions/applications. The binary code is not arbitrary, converted back into text it lists the names of the people who contributed to the thesis.

Hands, ๐Ÿ–๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ–๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿ–๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ–๐Ÿป, and more hands. (Skin) colour palette for a project I finally get to talk about!

Made these super clean hand illustrations (with added surgical tools, sutures and knots in the final versions) for a new book on, you've guessed it, stitching.

When clarifying a subject through illustrations, the underlying philosophy is to make understanding the images as effortless as possible. This means mostly calm/harmonious colours, clear and recognisable shapes and lines, and a bit of contrast where needed. Those are the basics.

Easy in theory, but when you find practice looking like a bunch of fingers fidgeting and tangled up in tiny threads you have to think twice about how to visualise it all clearly. Or three times. Or four times, then take a โ˜•๏ธ break, and think a fifth time...

But then after the fifth time you get some crystal clear and concise illustrations๐Ÿ‘

Illustration from a while back๐Ÿ‘†. Very flowy, almost cell shaded look of the stomach and surrounding structures.

Definitely more of an art piece than a medical illustration (which was the intention). I think this is the very first time I've not drawn the aorta abdominalis and vena cava as straight lines๐Ÿค”.

Work in progress, very excited to share an early sketch of one of the covers that I am working on. It's for a thesis on robot assisted surgery and wow do these robots look awesome (not even mentioning their impressive functions).

Early sketches like these serve to help me get the most important elements right, in this case the robot and surgeon's arm. Getting details right is crucial to me, like the type of scalpel, length and fit of the glove, grip, etc.

Messing these up gets you the silly commercial stock photo effect, where you'll see a smiling doctor (who is probably not a doctor) wearing their stethoscope the wrong way or grabbing a reflex hammer too close to the head๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ

After I get feedback on these elements, I can start working on the composition and colours, and finalise the illustration into a great looking and fitting cover!

Finally get to share two cover illustrations I recently completed!

Illustration of the heart and of an Egyptian heart amulet in RGB-CMY colours, referencing cardiac muscle measurement outputs.

Many cultures have stories involving self-fulfilling prophecies. There's the Greek legend of Oedipus, the Roman story of Romulus and Remus, the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata and the several Arabian tales from One Thousand and One Nights.

Here's a little peek into a behavioural theory called the Pygmalion Effect, which explains how self-fulfilling prophecies might work!

Let me know if there are any theories you'd like to see explained or illustrated!

Colouring after putting all the linework down is sooo satisfying. Little look behind the scenes on my work in AI.

Wednesday warm-up! I sometimes do some sketches/warm-up exercises before starting big drawings, thought I might share some of them here. These sketches here are the essential molecules that make up RNA (basically DNA's translator for the rest of the body).

Lot of fun to draw and pretty easy too๐Ÿ˜. Any ideas for other sketches/warm-ups I could do? Leave a suggestion:)
