GPI Consultancy

GPI Consultancy GPI Consultancy is a Dutch consultancy firm in the field of offshore sourcing (both ICT and Business Process Outsourcing).

Although a small country, Holland is one of the largest users of offshore ICT-services in Europe. Over the years, hundreds of Dutch companies have offshored, including Philips, Shell, ABN Amro Bank and KLM. Although India is the most important source, the Dutch have been egalitarian in choosing their suppliers: at least 30 nations have conducted software work for Dutch organizations. The Dutch mar

ket for offshore services will continue to grow, especially among the SME-sector (Smaller and Medium Sized Enterprises). GPI Consultancy is a specialised Dutch consultancy firm in the field of offshoring (also known as offshore sourcing or offshore outsourcing), related to both ICT and BPO (Business Process Outsourcing). We assists Dutch clients in several areas: Offshore Strategy, Offshore Transition and Cultural Training Services. The Dutch ICT sector has not yet discovered the potential of export markets in the Middle East and the Gulf region. We have started a project designed to promote Dutch ICT exports to this region. Accessing these new markets and organizing ICT business trips to Dubai are part of this project. Our Palestinian contacts can be used for localisation (e.g. translating the software into the Arabic language). They can also assist in market research and marketing and sales, since they already belong to networks in the region. In order to promote offshore sourcing, our consultants are involved in writing articles in Dutch ICT and business magazines and in assisting journalists. Sofar, more than 100 articles in the Dutch language have been published. And since the year 2000, GPI Consultancy organizes full-day and half-day seminars on offshoring. With speakers on different topics, they include Dutch case studies on a range of countries (e.g. India, Czech Republic, Romania, Ukraine, Malta, Bulgaria, Russia, Bangladesh, Serbia, Malaysia, Kenya, Palestine, Kenia, China). We also organize offshore ICT/BPO-missions on a regular basis, and to various countries. The goal of these missions is to give the Dutch participants detailed information about offshore sourcing, and especially about the opportunities in a certain country. Examples of destinations: India, Nepal, China, North Korea, Palestine, Bangladesh, Surinam, Malta and Kenya. We also assist organizations from developing countries in the field of Private Sector Development. GPI Consultancy was involved in export promotion projects initiated by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (CBI, Center for the promotion of imports from Developing Countries), HIVOS, ITC (International Trade Centre, Geneva), European Union, GTZ, Friedrich Naumann Foundation, government organizations, trade promotion organizations and ICT associations.

Webinar 'IT cooperation with Turkey' (January 25, 2023)

Turkey provides interesting opportunities for the Dutch (and Western-European) IT sector. The Dutch IT labor market has been very tight for many years and the outlook for 2023 is not much better. Because of the difficulty in recruiting experienced staff, it makes sense to look across the border. Highly trained specialists are available in Turkey, and companies such as Philips, Booking.com and ASML have already brought over hundreds of Turkish developers.

It is also possible to engage Turkish software developers remotely. And because the local labor costs are lower there than in the Netherlands, there are opportunities for cost savings as well. However, Turkey is not yet known as a ‘nearshore’ destination. For this reason, we plan to organize a webinar on this topic on Wednesday, January 25 (from 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM CET).

During this online event, several speakers will discuss the benefits of nearshoring, conducting IT projects remotely, and the status of the IT sector in Turkey. Registration for the webinar is possible at https://nstr.network/seminar-2

My research report "A Value Chain Analysis about the IT Outsourcing sector in Egypt' has now been published.

IT Outsourcing consists of a range of IT-services; the main topic of this report is application outsourcing, such as software support and custom application development. Thousands of Egyptian IT companies are active in this field and are working for domestic clients. Hundreds of Egyptian firms are also offering these services to foreign markets, especially to clients in the Gulf region (GCC). The European markets are served on a much more limited scale.

Because of the growth for offshore outsourcing in the main export markets, the outsourcing sector in Egypt is expected to grow over the coming years – provided the internal political situation does not deteriorate.

The current Egyptian IT exports are valued at around EUR 712 million, creating a total of 161,000 jobs. The United States and European markets are the key markets for outsourcing services, while the market share of Europe is around 30% of the worldwide market. The European market for IT outsourcing is also expected to grow over the next three years. Any company from a specific country, including Egypt, that can deliver either sector or domain competencies, has a distinct advantage in Europe. It is important to specialise in something specific and remain one step ahead. Egyptian IT companies have experience with several of the new trends, such as big data, mobile application development, Internet of Things and Virtual and augmented reality.

Egypt has now a large number of IT firms, and those working for foreign clients mainly target the Middle East and North Africa region. Others have clients in Europe (even with local representations). While global services delivery operations have been mostly concentrated in Cairo, other large cities such as Mansoura, Asyut, Alexandria and Luxor also have well-developed local economies and provide access to large talent pools. Egypt is also one of the fastest-growing entrepreneurship regions in the Middle East and North Africa.

The report has been compiled by Paul Tjia (GPI Consultancy), on behalf of CBI. To download the report:https://www.cbi.eu/sites/default/files/market_information/researches/VCA%20ITO%20Egypt.pdf

The Dutch Centre for the Promotion of Imports from developing countries (CBI) has been partnering worldwide for more than 45 years with governments, sector bodies and Small and Medium entrepreneurs in working on improved export performance to the EU. In the past period, it has made several Value Chain Analysis to explore new opportunities in Egypt. Desk and field research has also been conducted for the Value Chain Analysis of the IT Outsourcing sector in Egypt.

Recently, a round table meeting took place to validate the findings regarding the opportunities on the European Market and the obstacles that hinder access to this market for the Egyptian IT outsourcing companies.

As part of this online meeting related to Egypt, I also gave the presentation 'Opportunities on the EU markets for offshore IT outsourcing', which included some practices for penetrating these markets. For a link to this presentation:

Over the last decade, the Palestinian ICT sector has shown continuous growth in products and services. There are more than 300 ICT-related companies, both in the West Bank as in Gaza, with a total of around 5000 employees. For European clients, Palestine can be considered an upcoming nearshore outsourcing destination, since it is only 4 hours by plane and there is hardly any time difference. We have made an overview:https://www.gpic.nl/Outsourcing-Palestine-UO.pdf

Producing animation in North Korea is a viable option, and the work is of high quality with relatively low costs. European clients have been outsourcing this work since 1986. In order to check opportunities for collaboration, animation studios in Pyongyang can be visited during our upcoming study tour to DPRK from 17 - 25 September 2018.

Free Online course on Globally Distributed Software Engineering will ! Working in a company with distributed software engineering teams? Interested in exploring offshore sourcing? Already outsourcing to India or Eastern Europe? Develop the technical and organizational skills you need to practice software engineering in a globally distributed environment.

Software engineering operates ever more frequently in globally distributed settings. This practice, also known as Globally Distributed Software Engineering (GDSE) has advantages and disadvantages that need to be addressed in a thoroughly practical way.

On 24 October 2017, the new MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) on Globally Distributed Software Engineering (GSE101x) starts. One professor of Delft Technical University and 13 guest lecturers tell you all about it! This software engineering course covers the subject in an accessible and practical manner. You will be introduced to the different pros and cons of GDSE, the practical consequences of GDSE and its technological feasibilities and infeasibilities. The course includes the practical experiences of users and examples of GDSE applications such as outsourcing, offshoring, nearshoring and multi-partner systems development.

You will learn how to develop the technical and organizational skills required to carry out software engineering when distributed around the globe. These will be based on analysis of best-practice examples from distributed software engineering project teams. Guest lectures from industry experts and researchers will be an integral part of the course. These lectures will demonstrate how GDSE is handled in industry, how decision-makers lead their teams in this context, and what is the state- of-the-art in GDSE research. For example, Paul Tjia (GPI Consultancy) will discuss the trends in country selection. Several destinations will be covered, including India, Bangladesh, Palestine and North-Korea.

During the course, you will have hands-on experience of GDSE by working together with team members from different countries as a distributed team. Together you will prepare a number of artefacts that build on the body of knowledge of GDSE and so have the chance to contribute to this growing field of knowledge.

What you'll learn:
- To understand the main constructs of globally distributed software engineering theory.
- How to apply the principles of globally distributed software engineering in your own company’s practice.
- To produce an artifact that adds to the overall body of knowledge of globally distributed software engineering.
- To identify the main concepts in decision-making and leadership roles in a globally distributed context.
