Tips and Tricks – Managing Startup Programs

Does your computer boot slowly? We’ve got a tip to speed up the booting time.

When you boot up your computer, it doesn’t only start running Windows, but most of the time a whole heap of other programs as well. For example Skype, Spotify or torrent clients. Besides that, a lot of programs will start running in the background, where you won’t notice them.

To avoid having to change the Startup preference per program, you can use the Windows program “msconfig”.

Msconfig is easily started in all Windows versions. By pressing the Windows key and “R” at the same time the program “Run” will pop up.

Type “msconfig” in the bar and press enter.

Click on the tab “Startup”.

Here you can select the programs you’d like to start up when the computer boots. Check the boxes of the programs you’d like to enable and uncheck those you want to disable. Click “OK” or “Apply” and the changes will be saved.

*WARNING*
Certain programs must be enabled at all times for the computer to function properly.

We’ve made a short list of programs that are SAFE to disable.

Itunes
Apple Push
Spotify
Adobe programs, such as Reader, Photoshop and Dreamweaver.
Torrent programs, such as µtorrent and Bittorrent.
Microsoft Office
Java AutoUpdater
All Google programs
Dropbox (when disabled, Dropbox will start synchronizing files only after running the program manually)

Tips en Tricks – Opstart programma’s beheren

Start je computer langzaam op? Dan hebben wij een tip voor jou!

Bij het opstarten van je computer start niet alleen het programma Windows op, maar vaak ook een hele hoop andere programma’s zoals Skype, Spotify of torrent-cliënten. Tevens zullen er programma’s in de achtergrond opstarten waarvan je niet zo makkelijk kunt zien dat dit gebeurt.

Om de opstart instellingen per programma te vermijden kun je het Windows programma "msconfig" gebruiken.

Je kunt msconfig in elke Windows versie makkelijk opstarten.Door de toetsen combinatie "Windows-toets" + "R" in te drukken verschijnt het programma "Uitvoeren".

Tik hier: "msconfig" en druk op enter.

Klik op het tabblad "opstarten".

Binnen dit tabblad kun je programma’s selecteren die wel of niet mee moeten opstarten met de computer. U kunt de programma’s in- of uitschakelen door de vakjes wel of niet aan te vinken en vervolgens op "OK" of "Toepassen" te klikken.

Bepaalde programma’s in deze lijst moeten opstarten zodat de computer goed blijft functioneren.

Every Windows 8 user is familiar with this common problem: Where is the start button?!

Classic Shell is a program which provides the original start button for Windows 8.
There are many other programs which do the same thing, but Classic Shell is the only free version that works properly.

After installing the program, your good old start button will be back and it will be like the Windows 7 era isn’t in the past just yet.

Tips & Tricks – Removing Malware

When you feel like your PC or laptop is running slower, when toolbars suddenly appear in your Internet browser or when you find startup programs which you’ve never knowingly installed, it is possible your computer has been infected with malware.

While it can be difficult to remove viruses, removing malware is actually quite easy. The program we’d like to put in the spotlights this week is Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Below you will find a link to the website where you can download the program. Ninite.com also offers an installation (see our Tips and Tricks – ninite.com).

When you run the program, it will ask you to do updates. Choose “yes” and the program does the rest. Depending on the version you’re using, choose “full scan” or “threat scan” and click “scan now”.

After the scan has finished, the program will display a list of threats. All you have to do is check the boxes and click on “delete”. And there you are: Your PC is a bit cleaner again!
