In Stereophile Magazine’s Brilliant Corners #41, Alex Halberstadt writes about the time he lived with the MU2 in his system. He starts by thanking us for striving for perfection in stead of accepting “good enough” philosophies. And then he talks about all the great hours of music listening he enjoyed, highlighting many records. His pieces are always a joy to read. We copy some excerpts below, but please read the original article on Stereophile’s homepage.

“One of the first tracks I listened to through the Grimm was a Qobuz stream of "My Funny Valentine" from Paul Desmond's Desmond Blue, an album that shouldn't work but does. (…) But what surprised me, given this track's streamed, disembodied origin, was its emotional accessibility. Desmond's improvisation is freighted with more despair than most readings of the Rodgers and Hart standard, and the Grimm conveyed the inward, lacerating quality of the performance with insight and force. Hearing this from a digital file was both unexpected and exciting.

This inspired me to play one of those records I rarely try to listen to on digital: Dreaming My Dreams, the song cycle Waylon Jennings recorded in 1975. (…) Some digital components extract copious detail but do it surgically, without regard for the music's texture, density, and ambience, killing the patient on the table. But on the album's rollicking opener, "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way," the MU2 illuminated the song's structure without smothering its excitement or scrubbing away its messy energy and drive. And Jennings's blustering guitar solo, one of the most memorable he's recorded, came through without being hollowed out or polished into dullness.

The Grimm is one of those rare components that nails both functionality and performance while remaining reliable. It offers some of the best—and least musically destructive—sound from streaming I've experienced. (…) Handing the Grimm back to the FedEx guy was no fun at all.”

We are very happy to let you know that this week we are building the first batch of PA1’s. So far we only had a couple of prototypes, now it starts to become reality!

Comments from the first dealers who auditioned the PA1 prototypes are coming in. Without exception they are totally overwhelmed by their performance. One told us that when comparing them to the most impressive amplifiers on the market the PA1’s “put some to shame”. He even wrote a short review to us:

The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel, internationally known on Youtube, had the privilege of publishing the first review of our new PA1 mono block power amplifiers. Hans talks about the PA1’s functionality and the technique under the hood and then clearly outlines his opinion on the sound quality:
“The stereo image is wide and deep. Spaces between the instruments are well defined and the background is pitch black. (…) Dynamics are perfectly rendered as are microdynamics. We could never hear any coloration on any instrument and no instrument influenced other instruments.”

His payoff stunned us:
“Don't go to demos if your budget is too tight, for you will be sold within 3 minutes and then you might need another 5 minutes to admit you're sold.”

We have enjoyed a very succesful StereoNET Hi-Fi & AV Expo in Singapore. The room was packed all three days… and still is in the closing hours. People were amazed by both our active and passive systems that were considered by many in local social groups as ‘best of show’. Kudos to our local distributor Project Perfection Pte Ltd, thanks Desmond!

JPLAY is an audiophile oriented music playback and control app for iOS and MacOS. With today’s JPLAY v1.4.3 update a full integration of the app with our MU1 and MU2 streamers is achieved. The MU1 and MU2’s UPnP interface supports ‘UPnP Eventing’ and JPLAY embraces this method in their latest release. As a result the JPLAY software receives information about a status change of the MU1 and MU2 streamers, such as upon a volume change or a pause message via the main k**b, the IR remote or the GRUI web interface. Since the status communication is now bidirectional, the user will experience a seamless integration. JPLAY configures all settings automatically when it streams to a MU1 or MU2, which ensures a smooth operation.

In new firmware for the MU1 and MU2 we offer a small but worthwhile improvement of the DSD filtering sound quality in the MU2 and of the PCM and DSD filtering in the MU1. We also addressed a couple of robustness issues that could happen in rare use cases, among others a spurious indicated coefficient error in the MU2 and DSD playback interruptions via UPnP. In addition the web GRUI now has the same styling as the LS1 Control Software and MacOS handling of a mounted internal disk is improved. More details can be found in the Change Log documents of the MU1 and MU2 on our website.

MU1 and MU2 owners are recommended to run the firmware update. Instructions about how to perform the update can be found in the product manual. As always, please remain patient while the firmware is being updated.

One of the world’s largest Hi-Fi publications StereoNET makes a strong move by founding a major new show in Singapore: Asia Hi-fi & AV Expo StereoNET Hi-Fi & AV Expo. It will be held from July 10-12 in the famous Marina Bay Sands hotel. Grimm Audio is present and exhibits in room 3910. We will show our two core product lines to the Asian audience: the MU1 digital streamer with LS1c / SB1 digitally controlled loudspeakers and the MU2 streaming DAC with our brand new PA1 mono block amplifiers and prototype passive two way loudspeakers.

The latter system was considered “best of show” by many at the Vienna High End last month and the MU1-LS1c combination received similar praise at the Axpona show in April. Clearly both systems have their unique qualities and this is an exceptional chance to compare their sound in one room. Janis Ian’s Breaking Silence was released in 1992. It contains very personal songs, the title is to be taken literally. Janis had gone through a few years of illness and financial fraud and after her coming-out about it she recorded this record. At that moment she thought she was going to get only one chance to state what she wanted, so (and I cite) "I wanted to make it count". “His Hands” deals with spousal abuse, “Breaking Silence” with in**st, “Tattoo” with the Holocaust. I love this record. It is honest, forthright, emotional. It is also very very well recorded and I don't know about the original pressing but the 180 gr Analogue Productions version I have (mastered by Bob Ludwig) is excellent. But be warned: technically it goes to the limit! It can be a killer for phono cartridges and preamps. To be honest it was quite revealing while designing the PW1 and taught us a lot.

For a description of the challenges this recording poses I'll quote the words John French (Jay Jay French) from his PW1 review as I couldn't have said it better:
"... I have rarely, if ever, heard an album with such dynamic range and clarity. It is a real workout for any cartridge and especially any phono stage. Differentiating the bottom end sonics—separating the bass guitar and the slide bass— is a real phono preamp test. The Pass again sounded just fine until I connected the PW1. Tonal separation, especially in the bottom region, was simply far better defined through the PW1. Both units reproduced vocals with similar sonic excellence, however."

Let me add that side 2 of this LP seems to be even slightly louder / more dynamic than side 1. Especially track 2 (“This Train Still Runs”) appears to have peaks almost 3 dB heavier modulated than elsewhere. Note that the CD is fine too, but it seems slightly more polished.

Finally, if Janis' voice does not sound caressing, velvety (except when she cries out, of course), with lots of air surrounding her, you have work to do.....
