Everything we thought we knew about diversity and inclusion in the workplace is just the tip of the iceberg. 🧊

A few weeks ago, we had a Diversity & Inclusion Workshop, where we delved into the realities of our workplace dynamics. It was a way of uncovering layers of understanding beyond everyday awareness about diversity and inclusion at work.

Our key takeaways:

1️⃣ Inclusion is Essential: Having a diverse team isn't enough. Fostering an inclusive environment is crucial for the team's success.

2️⃣ Diverse Teams = Better Decisions: Evidence shows that diverse teams outperform homogenous ones in decision-making.

3️⃣ "If you have a brain, you have unconscious biases": Everyone has unconscious biases. These biases are automatic, unintentional, deeply ingrained, and influenced by our background, cultural environment, and personal experiences. They are a natural byproduct of our brain's tendency to categorize information and make quick judgments for efficiency. Recognizing and actively challenging these biases is crucial for fostering an inclusive and fair work environment.

4️⃣ We unconsciously include and exclude people by sorting them into In-groups/'A-Lists' and Out-groups/'B-Lists'.

This split happens mostly without anyone intending it. It's based on people's natural tendency to gravitate towards those who are like them or who stand out in some way. But it's important to realize this happens, so everyone gets a fair chance to shine and contribute to the team's success. Understanding and addressing this helps in maximizing everyone's potential and ensuring fairness.
