Platforms are shiftingโ€”AI summaries in Discover, shrinking social traffic, less reliable search. The audience that truly matters now is the one that comes directly to you.

That means designing front pages that reward repeat visits. Personalization shouldnโ€™t be a black boxโ€”it should reflect editorial priorities and adapt in real time.

As Tarjei Gilbrant writes: โ€œIf the page offers something fresh, the habit is reinforced. If not, the loop breaks. And...It should happen from the top of the homepageโ€

One whole week in NYC for the INMA World Congress of News Media โ€” what an experience!

This year at Kilkaya we decided to do something a little extraโ€ฆ So we went old school. We printed our own newspaper. Packed with insights from analytics and how to personalize your entire front page โ€” and handed it out with full-on paperboy energy:
โ€œEkstra, ekstra!โ€

It was a fun stunt, but with a serious message: news should adapt to readers โ€” not the other way around which also was one of the topics spoken about on personalization at the event.

What is informed personalisation โ€” and why does it matter for modern Newsrooms?

Itโ€™s the use of AI to tailor content to individual readers while preserving editorial judgement and intent. Unlike engagement algorithms optimised for clicks or time spent, informed personalisation aligns with newsroom values, putting quality journalism first.

This approach gives publishers the ability to deliver relevant, timely content that drives engagement, reduces churn, and builds lasting reader trust.
After rolling this out on front pages, we've seen a significant uplift in engagement for our customers.

This week, our CEO Tarjei had the pleasure of visiting the MOPO newsroom โ€” and meeting a team with the courage to explore, experiment, and innovate.

From front page editors to section leads and the editor-in-chief, everyone I spoke to showed a clear vision: embracing technology and personalization without losing sight of journalistic integrity.
