We’re kicking off 2026 with an exciting collaboration alongside the Smart Christchurch team to deploy our solar-powered Count Pod sensors across the city.

By harnessing the sun, our sensors operate continuously (24×7), delivering contextual movement and transport data while helping the city reduce installation costs and extend coverage sustainably.

With just over 40 Count Pods now live across Christchurch, the network is capturing high-value insights, including:

As Biketober rolls on, it’s clear why cycling is becoming one of Tāmaki Makaurau’s fastest-growing ways to get around. More people are choosing bikes because they’re healthy, affordable, and kinder to our environment. The CountPod uses a hybrid of AI plus background subtraction techniques so it can reliably classify pedestrians, bicycles, e-scooters, and vehicles, even under tricky lighting, shadows, or variable weather. Because it draws very little power (less than 6 watts), it can be solar-powered or run via existing street infrastructure, making the multiple installations on Hobson and Victoria Streets more flexible and cost effective.

This means decision-makers can see exactly how many people and vehicles pass, by what mode, at what speed, and where they go, information that feeds directly into planning, safety analysis, and investment strategy. This type of data which goes beyond simple counts, can help create safer crossings and footpaths by identifying where and when pedestrian volumes peak, and optimise traffic flow and signal timing based on actual usage patterns.

Brisbane is building a sustainable transport legacy for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with active transport at its core. A future focused approach to infrastructure development sees several initiatives designed to enhance walking and cycling infrastructure and create a connected, accessible city for everyone. Continuous data of pedestrian and active transport mode users plays a major role to ensure the budget spent on developing new infrastructure is invested with the best outcomes, not just for the Games, but for all future generations to enjoy.

The city is developing a new bridge to connect Toowong and West End, making movement safer and more efficient for pedestrians and cyclists. Along the Brisbane River, the City Reach Boardwalk will provide scenic, uninterrupted pathways for active commuters. In the inner city, existing pathways are being improved and new routes created to ensure seamless connectivity for walkers and cyclists.
