Planning on reading these holidays? Here’s my lineup…

I know most people love reading from a printed book but I usually read on my Kindle. The books are easy to buy, I can start reading straight away and one little tablet holds a world of adventure and wisdom.

My 6 picks for summer include two fiction books written by New Zealand women Penny Macdonald and Kirsten McKenzie. Both guaranteed to help you escape into an adventure. ‘The Old Bi***es Boarding School’ is hilarious, it follows the antics of a group of women finding their way after various catastrophes in their lives. I had a great time creating the cover of this book! ‘Fifteen Postcards’ is the first in a series of three which will have you travelling around the world and through time.

It’s been a busy and exciting year! We’ve created over 350 projects, designed over 1950 slides, created 86 infographics, helped clients win multi-million (and sometimes billion) dollar pitches, and saved a lot of hair from being pulled out in frustration.

I feel like I’ve been on a journey of transformation this year and I’m excited to continue this in 2024, bringing what I learn into every project we work on together.

You may have seen me a little more on social media recently and next year I’ll continue to show my face and connect via LinkedIn. We’ll be reaching out in some more creative spaces, with guest appearances on podcasts, regular case study updates and a new ‘One Minute Wednesday’ video series - teaching you some of the shortcuts and behind-the-scenes hacks to help you when you need to make quick edits to your slides.

I’m really grateful to the amazing remote team of designers and people who help me create the projects you give us. This year I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with: Terri Gasparich (with me in this photo), Holly Craig (who interned for two months while she was studying graphic design at AUT), Shana Rogers, Cat Chapman and I just recently started working with Tracy Muir (my new VA) - without whom, you wouldn’t get be seeing this post.

Have you ever watched a designer decorate a Christmas tree? It's a fine and specific artistic endeavour. Not to mention the art of gift wrapping.

I am obsessed with Christmas decorating. I buy things all year round and my good friend Michael Bublé MUST be playing when I decorate the tree.

I also make little vignettes around the house too - branches with decorations, and add lights to the stairs. Plus, I leave some of the lights up all year round - nothing like a bit of joy all year!

With many of my clients based internationally, the Stir Headquarters never really closes. I will still be taking some time off from the 24th December to the 2nd January to spend time with my family and enjoy the festivities and food.

I work with the wonderful team at the Spirit of Adventure Trust to produce their annual report every year.

The SOAT is an empowerment experience for young people to build courage, unlock their potential, learn leadership skills, resilience and make lifelong friends. They have just released a book celebrating the first 50 years of The Spirit of Adventure Trust as part of the 50th Anniversary celebrations.

‘A Spirit Companion’, by distinguished writer Roger McDonald relays stories from some of the tens of thousands whose lives have been touched by ‘the Spirit’. Through their eyes we share the unique experiences fostered over 50 years aboard Spirit of Adventure and Spirit of New Zealand Te Waka Herenga Tangata ō Aotearoa.

Beck’s Holiday Podcast Recommendations

I’m one of those people who is always reading and listening to things that inspire me and teach me skills to live a more fulfilling life.

One of my favourite poddies is called ‘The Super Creative’ by Catie Dawson.

The Super Creative podcast delivers candid conversations with inspiring women who are thriving in creative business. They talk about creativity, strategy, productivity, marketing, success, failure, fulfilment, health, happiness, and everything-in-between. It is a behind the scenes look at the clever women who make a living being creative, and how they do it.

In particular, I enjoyed the Olivia Boswell episode - she's open and vulnerable and super gutsy! She talks about her journey from being made redundant to starting her own PR company. From being on the benefit to becoming self sufficient and serving an incredible range of clients.

Why we do what we do…

This spontaneous lunch at the beach brings me so much joy because it shows exactly why I chose to start Stir - to have freedom to grab time with the kids whenever I can. On this day, with both kids on study leave, we made our way to our favourite sushi spot and had lunch on the beach. It's these simple, precious moments that define the "why" behind Stir.

Working with a remote team from home isn't just about the convenience; it's about having the freedom to shape the life I want to live. It's about finding that perfect balance between professional success and personal fulfilment.

Todays word of the day:

Leading - the space left between lines of text.

You can adjust this in PPT in the Home tab under paragraph and Line Spacing.

I use Multiple because it gives you a lot of control. My favourite is 0.9 (or less) if I want the lines to be closer together than the default ‘single’. If you use this in bullet points, it can be a great way to save some space.

If you add in a space after of about 6-10 it’ll give each bullet it’s own ‘space’ to breathe.

Last week, I went to ‘Brunch by the Bay' - a design community networking and learning event hosted by Creative Launchpad. Creative Launchpad is run by RocketSpark (a fantastic, easy-to-use New Zealand-based web design program). It’s am amazing community of graphic designers seeking business and design confidence. A place to learn, connect & be inspired.

These guys really know how to make designers feel ‘seen’. Each of the 100 or so designers at ‘Brunch in the Bay’ was gifted a (branded/customised) glass water bottle as we arrived which included a small yet high impact personal touch with a individualised, hand written message - it just about brought me to tears!

Laura Feaveryear from Creative Jam delivered an incredibly inspirational talk and presentation about her journey to be becoming a widely recognised packaging designer in the FMCG industry whilst dealing with a rare eye condition that impedes her vision. Laura’s unique and immersive way of working means that she fully researches the FMCG market, visits supermarkets regularly to see what’s new and attends FMCG conferences not just design ones.

Our three panellists, Ruth Lever, Harry Burt and Sarah Marshall took part in our question and answer session, offering their practical advice from a wide range of topics from design process and client management, to pricing and overcoming imposter syndrome. One of my key take-aways from Harry was to build your business as a creative project - see the fun in it and explore possibilities.

I work with a remote team so walking into a room of designers is sometimes overwhelming - this event was different. The atmosphere on the day was inspirational, friendly and collaborative. I highly recommend you book early for the next one!
