I swear this picture has to do with Virtual Reality paintball.

Hey, so, what the hell is this thing?

This thing is we've been working on at Infima Labs for the better part of the year. It's a 2 dimensional representation of a 3 dimensional A15 phase structure. If you don't know what that means, you're not the only one - but what we're aiming to achieve is superbly simple.

Since the formation of Infima Labs, our basic goal was to make VR better. Our experiences in other competitive Virtual Reality titles showed that there was a lot of room to improve in terms of tracking, latency, and overall game experience compared to a non-VR game. In reality, a lot of these symptoms can be traced back to a few basic problems; the most pressing being the huge amount of data that needs to be transmitted across a network.
Anyone who has played a game online before has suffered from lag, often manifesting itself in yelling "I totally shot that guy!" at your monitor. VR can experience even more severe lag issues as there are more highly accurate data points to transmit, and when these data demands aren't met, a VR player will lose the feeling of immersion, get frustrated or may even become nauseous as objects jump around the game directly in front of their eyes.

The draft research paper at https://infima.space, is the first step towards breaking down these data limits. By creating a completely new addressing system that is essentially lossless compression of position data, we will be able to communicate more data faster, with the aim of lightning fast 10 vs. 10 VR multiplayer on day-one release.

The public unveiling of this draft marks the advent of our internal "Arena Core" platform we have been teasing in our social media spaces for a while, and finally allows users to look into our work.
Now this has been released, we're immediately looking forward to the next step which is seamless integration with Grit Paintball, and implementing all of the other background changes we have made during the year.

We've been busy working behind the scenes on Grit's infrastructure :D

Hi folks!
We've just incorporated a feedback system for Grit Paintball that's directly linked to our internal issue-tracking system and code-versioning tool -- please use it, and let us know what does or does not work!

Today is a big day for Deadbolt Custom Works and my long term project, Grit Paintball.

I started developing Grit as a way to occupy my time during the 2020 Covid lockdown, and it quickly became a passion project. I knew nothing about game development, but thanks to a short video where I managed to get a real paintball gun working in Virtual Reality, and the massively positive reception the video got from the paintball community, I got stuck in. I was smashing out 60+ hour weeks during my time at home going down the rabbit hole of coding and software development, and learning a hell of a lot along the way. I'm super proud of what I've managed to achieve from a blank slate, and blown away with the some of the success stories I've heard that have stemmed from using Grit as a training tool.
I've always been honest about my goals with Grit, what I wanted to achieve, and how much that I'd personally be able to accomplish with my homeschooled game development skills. As Grit got more and more complex, I knew I had to bring on specialist developers to really take Grit to another level. What I got was substantially different.

As of December 1st, 2022, Deadbolt Custom Works no longer owns the rights or any intellectual property related to Grit Paintball.

From here on in, development of Grit is in the hands of a brand new game development studio - introducing Infima Labs!

Infima Labs is the brainchild of C Anthony Risinger, a Software Developer from the United States. He approached me early this year about possibly purchasing Grit with the aim of pushing Grit's development forward quickly, and trying to create the best multiplayer experience of not just a paintball game, but trying to grow virtual paintball into a more mainstream game that is still true to the sport.
After chatting to him for months, I was seriously impressed with his enthusiasm for taking Grit to that next level that I would never have been able to accomplish on my own... But it was SO hard to let go of something that I've poured countless hours into.

So I didn't.

Together, Anthony and I formed Infima Labs. From here on in, Anthony is going to be working his substantial coding wizardry on optimising what exists and pushing out new features, while I take a technical back seat and focus on project management, asset design, marketing, social media and steering the metaphorical ship.

It's exciting to be announcing this to the world after working towards it for the last 8 months, but even more exciting that Grit now has the chance to become what I've always wanted it to be, and so much more.

Great to get out on the weekend and play some non-virtual paintball again!
Took some time to compare real life to Grit, and noted that the FOV seems slightly off compared to what the eye really sees, so I'll attempt to sort that out in the future. Pretty cool to make a day of shooting a business trip :D

Cheers to Immortal Knights for the event and Terry for the pic!

It's been a few months since I last posted, because it's taken that long to finally get (almost) set up after moving cities. Still have a few little jobs to do, like building this wee rack cabinet to stash my recently transplanted home server in.
More game development and 3D printed stuff coming soon hopefully!

After something like 11 years, 2 new sets of earpads and a solder repair job on the dongle, my headset has finally given up (only physically - they still sound pretty good!)
I'll be gluing these back up to have as a spare pair, but I reckon it's about time to start looking for an upgrade.
is still going strong though - and that's probably a couple of years older!

The layout for the NXL Lone Star Open has been released, and looks crazy! It's a pretty difficult one to build due to bunkers being automatically mirrored in Grit's field editor, so I've taken the liberty of building this one myself and chucking it up in the Grit Paintball Discord server - https://discord.gg/v8XjvzF5PH
Head over there to download it if you can't be bothered building it yourself!
