Aotearoa’s second best are now the second best in the world.

Ruamata Pure OCC have claimed silver in the Open Men’s V6 1500m at the Va’a World Sprints, crossing the line in 6:44.95.

Aotearoa dominated the final line-up, with four NZ crews lining up alongside one team from Tahiti and one from Hawai‘i. In a fight right to the finish, Pure OCC dug deep to edge out Team Pineula for silver.

This one also carries a little extra meaning. After more than 20 years paddling together, this could possibly be their last 1500m race in the Open Men’s division, as members of the crew begin making their way into the Masters age grades.

Rāhia caught up with Wiri Hohepa, Mitch Zandstra, Nona Taute, Courtney Higgins, Manawa Irwin and Sam Baker moments after they came off the water as world silver medallists.

We’re into the semifinals, e hoa mā, and Aotearoa crews are locking in their places in today’s finals! 🔥

First to book their spot were Ngā Kōpara Toa from Horouta Waka Hoe, clocking 5:20.19 in the Master 50 Women’s V6 1000m and heading into their final with the fourth fastest time, they’ll be in Lane 1 at 6:52pm NZ Time.

The first of 16 finals gets underway from around 1:10pm Singapore time | 5:10pm NZ time, and Taioro News will be right there as our Aotearoa crews come off the water, bringing you their reactions as the medals are decided.

For the first time at these World Sprints, the Open paddlers were back together in their V6 club crews, taking on the gruelling 1500m turn races.

We followed Aotearoa’s current top three Open Men’s crews, Vaka Manu from Manukau, Ruamata Pure OCC and Team Pineula, as they finally got their chance to see where they stand on the world stage.

All three won their opening heats, with Pineula clocking the second fastest time across nine heats. But today is where it gets serious. In a matter of hours, they’ll line up in the semi-finals, where one race stands between them and a shot at a world title.

From Ūawa to the world stage, Kirimamae are showing they belong amongst the best.

We’ve followed this Open Women’s crew on their journey from home all the way to the World Sprints in Singapore, and now they’re showing exactly why they earned their place here.

Kirimamae finished second in their V6 1500m heat in 7:51.62, but recorded the fourth fastest time across all seven heats.

Their path to the semifinals now goes through the repechage, but they head into it knowing they have the speed to match the world’s best, backed by a strong support crew who have been with them every step of the way.

More than 20 years paddling together, Ruamata Pure OCC are still lining up alongside each other on the world stage.

They came into the World Sprints as Aotearoa’s second fastest Open Men’s crew over the 1500m distance, and today they delivered, winning their heat in 6:57.07 to secure their place in the semifinals.

But for this crew, waka ama has always been about more than racing. Rāhia caught up with Wiri Hohepa about more than two decades paddling together, and the lifelong friendships they’ve built along the way.

came into the World Sprints as Aotearoa’s third fastest Open Men’s 1500m crew, but today they showed they’re right in the mix with the world’s best.

They produced one of the fastest times, winning their heat in 6:52.15 and putting themselves in a strong position heading into the semi-finals.

Rāhia spoke to Manutea Millon, who has been racing since day one of the World Sprints, about what it means to finally have his Pineula teammates beside him.

Aotearoa’s top Open Men’s 1500m crew has a new look on the world stage.

Vaka Manu from Manukau dominated the V6 1500m at National Sprints earlier this year. But with some of the crew that qualified them unable to make the trip to Singapore, they’ve recruited some serious talent to fill those seats.

That includes newly crowned J19 V1 World Champion Maia Campbell and Tupu King, who finished fourth in the Open Men’s V1 here in Singapore.

Today, that new-look Vaka Manu crew got their first chance to see how they stack up against the world’s best, winning their heat over five turns in 6:56.92. Jake Suitauloa spoke with Rāhia straight after their first race.

You can have the fastest crew on the water, but one bad turn can cost you the race.

On Day 6 of the Va’a World Sprints in Singapore, the 1000m turn races tested much more than speed. Six paddlers, multiple turns and only seconds separating the world’s best left little room for error.

We spoke to Aotearoa’s paddlers and steerers about what it takes to nail the turns, and why getting it right takes the entire crew working as one.

From first-time national paddlers to the world stage in just a matter of months, Hinematioro from Ūawa have come a long way in a short time.

Half of the crew were new to the National Sprints this year, competing for the first time in January. Today, they lined up in their first V6 1000m race at the IVF Va’a World Sprints, finishing third in their J16 Women’s heat. Rāhia spoke to Tawhipare Te Purei about their journey from Ūawa to Singapore and how far this young crew has come.

Pineula Boom Bullets are the reigning Aotearoa national champions in the J16 Men’s W6 1000m, winning the national title earlier this year.

They brought that national championship form to the world stage today, taking out their heat in 4:48.92 and setting themselves up well for the next round. Rāhia caught up with Lochlan Te’o after the race to hear how the crew felt about their performance and representing Pineula in Singapore.
