Waikaretu School got in touch with a simple question: could they still call 111 on their VoIP phone lines during an extended power outage?

We went out to catch up and have a look. Turns out they didn't need a dedicated backup solution. We had already built the resilience into the network we'd put in place. What they did need was a bit of extra runtime on their wireless phones, so we dropped off a spare UPS and talked through exactly how we'd support them if a real outage hit.

Job done in ten minutes. The rest of the day was the good bit.

Craig, our Rural Network Manager and 15-plus year Lightwire veteran, ran the students (all 18 of them) through how Lightwire actually gets internet to their homes, and got a solid grilling of sharp questions back. Then came a tour of one of our Utes, which went down better than anything on the tech side of the visit.

Rural connectivity work isn't only about towers and signal. It's about being on the ground solving real problems and reinvesting in the schools and communities that we serve.
