Holy Smokes there's a lot going on at the moment! Our team are pretty hectic with no sign of that slowing down (that's certainly not saying that there's not room for more!!).

Not all of what we are seeing going on out there is good sadly, and there seems to be yet another surge of phishing emails doing the rounds... Key word there is "another"...

If an email looks dodgy then that's exactly how you should treat it. Don't be in a hurry to open any attachments or links from someone you don't know. Spend a minute or two to look at the senders email address (this is usually the first telltale sign) and domain, the wording is often not correct and is commonly what we'd refer to as broken English. There's often a sense of urgency in the tone or content which is there specifically to make you want to act without thinking about a potential consequence.

If all fails and you're still not 100% sure, DELETE IT!

The Alexis team have been battling through the Winter period with only a couple of crew members being hit by the myriad of bugs going around. The ability to work remotely has been a huge saving grace and if this is something you and your business still haven't jumped on then get in touch! There's a number of fantastic solutions that make working remotely super-simple.

In the meantime, please be diligent and treat any suspicious looking email with care.

Safe to say, not every job we do is glorious!

We were recently asked to shoot over to Tauranga to tidy up some data cabling in an Office space that the previous tenants had vacated and add a new AP to the centre of the room. Clearly there was a bit more to the job than that, but needless to say the client was stoked with the outcome as were we.

The team are STILL under the pump with a ever-growing list of work ahead which, it must be said, is just awesome. Even Wayne and Jayson have been on the tools so what does that tell you?!!

We are looking at stocking some seriously cool new product shortly which we we will be introducing once we've had it through rigorous testing and are 100% sure that it's the action.

Apologies for the lack of updates recently, time has well & truly been against us! Stay with us team... we'll be back with you again soon. Be safe out there, especially while the the wet stuff is upon us. Again.

As we edge ever-closer to the Christmas of 2022, it would take a brave soul to not admit that they are (at the very least) a little nervous about what next year is going to bring us. To be fair the media aren’t exactly helping with a seemingly limitless barrage of news items forecasting pending doom with recessions and that eminent return of growing Covid case numbers.

How people react to this type of news, both personally and professionally, can be as varied as you can possibly imagine. There are always going to be more questions than there are answers, so is the real trick simply not to not let ourselves get “distracted” by the negativity and fear?

In fact if you take the time to really stand back and look at it, it’s all one great big gigantic distraction from what we should really be doing, and that’s simply to keep doing what we know we do well (again both commercially and personally).Yes it’s quite possibly going to be a bit of a rocky road but the pain will absolutely be lessened by being focused.

Looking back throughout on 2022, Alexis IT has had a pretty amazing twelve months in terms of company growth, stability, onboarding new clients ranging from sole traders to major government corporates, and seemingly everything in between! Our staff numbers tripled, and even at this early stage we are already (potentially) looking to recruit more awesome people into our team early next year simply so we can keep up with forecast work.

So, if 2023 does in fact happen to throw up a few curveballs (as it inevitably will – don’t they always?) the “forecast doom” is far less likely to affect us a business thanks largely to stability. Irrespective, we’re still going to smile and do the very best we can to ensure that you, and your business, can charge on too. In a nutshell…. that’s what we do. That’s OUR job!

When the business changed hands back in 2019, Wayne’s vision wasn’t to become the biggest, most powerful, all-empowering IT provider in region. It was that Alexis IT was to be a business that people wanted to deal with due to good business ethics, doing what we said we were going to do, being easy to deal with, and ultimately to become a trusted advisor to our clients. Fair to say, that vision is very much realised.

We are approaching a crazy time of year and most of us are feeling fatigued and in need of a good break. Nothing beats being able to recharge the proverbial batteries and blow the cobwebs out. Wherever you are heading for your Christmas and New Year break, please take care out there on the roads and on the water.

Thank you to all of our customers for standing by us, coming on board, and providing us with some incredible opportunities. The entire team at Alexis IT would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Let's be honest about this for a sec shall we....

There is absolutely NOTHING more important to a business when it comes to I.T than the shear terror that encompasses us when everything suddenly stops working. What was simply irrelevant and unconsidered thirty seconds ago has instantly become the most urgent and pressing matter known to Earth.

Ahh yes... that spontaneous terror and instant onset of stress induced sweat, let alone the knowledge that in a matter of moments you are going to actually comprehend what you already know. The system is down!

The ensuing reaction of "this is costing us a fortune" (not normally so calmly spoken) combined with "OMG what have I lost?" whilst sometimes overreactive, is sadly none-the-less often true. So, herein lay the actual question...

Why is there (more often than not) NOT more priority placed on backup's, restores (and test restores) and even as "Priority One" simply ensuring that there's a solution in place to mitigate stress and reduce potential downtime to a minimum in the event of an outage?

As a business, if you haven't thought about this already then in all seriousness, you need to. Now. Like, SERIOUSLY!

As a business partner its our job to help you make an informed decision regarding system backups and restores. Please don't wait until it's too late.... Like some sadly do! Reach out today to discuss options and pricing. You may just be surprised!

2FA (more commonly know as Two Factor Authentication) is becoming increasingly prominent in the world of IT, more often it's now become compulsary. For some 2FA is a "must have" while to others it's a pain in the neck! The reality is however, that it's there to protect you, your data, and most importantly your credentials.

Why 2FA?
Multi-level authentication is necessary to increase/improve security for your accounts and online services. Passwords alone provide weak protection because they can be guessed and phished and, once stolen, tried against a range of accounts in the hope of securing a hit. Unfortunately, our own behavior makes a lot of this possible.

People typically have many online accounts. To make it possible to remember all their passwords they choose simple ones which, in the worst-case scenario, can be easily guessed. What’s more they reuse the same password, so much so that recent research revealed 54 per cent of employees use the same passwords across multiple work accounts (this all sound a bit too familiar?).

A password is something someone knows and so therefore it can be shared. Passwords can also be tricked out of people through phishing. Even more sophisticated, and now another danger to password-only protection, are "man-in-the-middle" (MiTM) attacks.

These come about when a cyberattacker is in the middle of communications between a service user and provider, both of whom believe they are communicating with each other. Make no mistake, the danger is very real and present!

2FA strengthens authentication because it adds another factor – something the user has (such as a one-time passcode or security key) or something they are (a unique physical attribute such as a fingerprint) – to the something they know (usually a username and password).

The humble password, our primary line of online defense for so long, is simply ill-equipped to deal with the range of threats it now faces. Only through a wider understanding and implementation of stronger forms of authentication, will business and consumer accounts, services and applications realize the higher levels of protection they deserve.

Still think 2FA is a pain?? Ask yourself this question. Is there anything more important than your identity and credentials?

What a seriously chaotic time it's been of late!

The team have been super busy on a number of different projects ranging from WiFi Access Point and data cabling upgrades to telephony, home automation, and even developing some exciting new reports that will revolutionise our customers' understanding of the state of their I.T environments.

We welcomed Jamie into the expanding Alexis IT team to help provide desktop support, and it's safe to say we are settling nicely into our new premises at 851 Victoria Street. On the subject of which, if you're in the area feel free to pop up to Level 1 and come say hi!

Our busy cabling team are full-noise installing new AP's and when they're not doing that, they're negotiating some precarious voids to connect a number of existing Comms rooms around an 𝘌𝘟𝘛𝘙𝘌𝘔𝘌𝘓𝘠 large site with new fibre ties.

The new Alexis van has been signwritten and (we think) it looks awesome! Next in the queue is the rest of the fleet which will also be given a fresh looks to match. Keep an eye out for them around town.

As hard as it is to believe, we are rapidly approaching the final quarter of 2022, and we all know what comes next right??? Maybe we'll tackle that one a little bit later... just for sanity's sake!

Whether it's IT, access control, data, or security needs.... never hesitate to reach out to our friendly team. At the end of the day, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 are the reason we have existed for the past 20+ years!

Like other trades in similar industries, so much of our work goes sight unseen. Some of that is due to remote desktop management, and with installs often that's simply down to taking time to make sure that everything is done to the highest possible standard. The devil is in the detail.... whether you see it or not!

Our cabling team are currently hard at work on a major Wi-Fi Access Point upgrade which, sadly, see's most of their efforts go unseen by the thousands that pass by on site each and every day. Hundreds of metres of new cable is being installed weekly, and is installed to the highest standard.

Alexis IT prides ourselves on a consistently high quality of workmanship, whether it's out there in the open for all to see with the likes of desktop hardware, Access Control solutions, or Server Cabinets, or it's hidden away up in a roofspace, in walls, or in behind patch panels.

Why is this important to you, the end user?? Because the quality of the installation is directly reflected in the quality of your solution.

We have been extremely busy for quite some time now, and to be able to (try) keep up with the ever-increasing workload we have welcomed three new faces on board whom you will be introduced to very soon!

To Jamie, Jenish, and Ronan... welcome to the Alexis IT team!

Our trusty mobile phones have become so much more than just a device to call people on. If you think about it honestly, voice is probably one of (if not THE) least used functions of the modern smartphone.

But, if you're looking for a better relationship between your Windows PC and Android smartphone, Microsoft just evolved “Your Phone” into “Phone Link” and added more features. Super simple to set up and navigate through!

As we officially start the second half of 2022, we thought we'd offer up something just a little different for a change...

Contacting a Helpdesk for support is typically the final straw and is usually seen as the last great act of defeat. Well.... here's a few stories that'll (hopefully) put a smile on your face as you realise you're probably a lot smarter than most!... Enjoy!
