UPDATE: After a severe weather event bombed the region, there are still a LOT of services that are unavailable.
Some cellsites are still off-line because of power or comms trunk failures.
If anything, everyone has learnt a lot from this experience, and we'll never know when the next one is due to hit. Be prepared and never put yours or other lives at risk.
*** IF YOU ARE MEDICALLY DEPENDANT ON POWER, INVEST IN A UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply). Maybe even invest in a small generator that can be deployed outside. ***
*** CHECK IN ON YOUR NEIGHBORS! Especially the elderly. Maybe even take over a cup of tea or even sit with them. Make it known that you are able to assist. ***
*** HAVE A 'BUG-OUT' KIT OR EMERGENCY KIT READY. Civil Defence have guides on what you can put together on any budget! Allow for 2-3 days. If you have pets, ALWAYS make sure they're included! ***
*** DON'T LEAVE HOME TO GO SIGHTSEEING! Keep the roads clear for emergency services! And make sure you and your family are safe at home! ***
*** DON'T RELY ON CELLPHONES! - Make sure you have a power-bank or two, fully charged and ready to go. GET AN AM/FM radio and monitor the major radio stations or local stations ***
*** IF YOU AREN'T FIRST AID TRAINED, CONSIDER BOOKING A COURSE - You may be required to render assistance! Once you have a certificate, consider becoming part of the GOODSAM network. ***
