In 1792 the first whaling ship arrived in Mangonui.

From the early 1800’s the township of Mangonui served as the base for whaling boats that came into Mangonui to replenish their fresh water supplies from the local stream and to take on provisions and conduct repairs.

So busy was this little port, that Mangonui Harbour records show up to 30 ships could be moored here at any one time.
