Catchment groups are stretched. Funding is tight. The list of things that need doing is always longer than the resources to do them.

So how are some groups quietly building erosion control programmes without waiting for a council initiative or government fund to get them started?

The answer isn't a new source of money - it's a better use of what they already have.

We've written about what that looks like, including the small but costly mistakes that happen when no one checks the details before poles go in the ground.

Worth a read if you're thinking about what your catchment could be doing on erosion →

If you're a catchment coordinator, you've probably hit this wall: a farmer is keen to plant, but the questions they're asking - funding criteria, species for steep country, slope specifications - aren't yours to answer.

And if you're a council land manager, you've probably done site visits where the first half-hour is just catching up on what the farmer actually wants.

There's a better way to connect those conversations. We've written about how a shared mapping platform can help - and why it's making a difference for catchment groups and councils working together.

What on earth happened to that carbon price?!

Join our next CarbonCurious live session to find out - and to get an early look at new planning tools we've built inside the CarbonCrop platform.

If you're thinking about planting on LUC 1-6 land, the new ETS restrictions add a layer of complexity to that decision. We'll show you how to use our new tools to see exactly how a proposed forest fits within the current allowances.

This session is for you if you:
🌳 want to understand what's driving the carbon price changes
🌳 are planning to register LUC 1-6 land in the ETS
🌳 want clarity on what's changing - and what's still undecided

If you're thinking about registering exotic forest in the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) to earn carbon credits, there are some important new rules to know about.

From 31 October 2025, most productive farmland (classified as LUC 1-6) has new restrictions on exotic ETS registrations. There are exemptions - including for existing forest, native species, and some types of land - and a 25% allowance that may still let you register part of your property.

The rules are detailed and the choices you make now can affect what you're able to do later.

We've put together a plain-English guide with a free LUC analysis for your land. Link in comments below.

Your choice of ETS LUC map echoes through time...

(couldn't help the Gladiator reference)

So understanding which LUC map (national or farm-level) to choose, and when that matters, could be a swing factor for your planting plans if you intend to register in the ETS.

This short clip from our recent CarbonCurious webinar explains how to choose your LUC map.

The rest of the webinar to get your head around the new restrictions, from what's restricted, exemption pathways, and understanding the easiest pathway - your 25% allowance.

If you want to understand the new ETS restrictions, how they might impact farm forestry, and what they mean for land use decisions, join our live session tomorrow.

The session will cover what this means if you:
1️⃣ Are planning to register LUC 1–6 land in the ETS
2️⃣ Want to understand how exemptions might apply to farms
3️⃣ Need clarity on what’s changing (and what’s still undecided)

The ChallengeETS-eligible forest was already growing on farms across the Puketoi to the Pacific catchment - but farmers had no easy way to assess it. Most weren’t even aware of its carbon potential, so that value was going unclaimed. With limited time and capacity, the Puketoi to the Pacific Catch...

No more dots. Just full boundaries, clearer context, and better planning.

We’ve made key updates to the All Sites Map so you can now see full farm boundaries across your catchment or portfolio, not just dots on a map. The map opens already zoomed to your sites, so you don’t need to pan around New Zealand to find them.
You can now view layers like HEL and land use, and filter directly on the map for even more control.

These changes make it easier to plan, prioritise, and engage with partners - whether you’re working with one farm or coordinating efforts across 100.

Restoring native forest doesn’t have to be so hard.

We already know what good looks like, and it’s already happening on farms across NZ. So why isn’t it happening everywhere?

Often, it’s not a lack of effort. It’s a lack of coordination, or lack of tools to help coordinate.

Restoration depends on many players - from landholders and catchment groups, to funders, field teams, and local government. But when everyone’s working off emails, scattered spreadsheets, and mismatched paperwork, even the best projects can stall.

That’s why we’re building tools to make collaborative planning easier - so restoration can move faster and deliver better outcomes.
