You probably wondered where we went??

We are still here and we still have all of our software and technical capabilities to make the most of the NZ travelling experience.

We just put it on hold while tourism went though some hard times.

I also got sick and couldn’t get out of bed for months. Chris went into awesome Dad mode keeping our kids healthy and happy while I recovered. Turned out we were expecting another whanau member. “Surprise!” Our pepi number four arrived in October.

I got involved with creating circularity and sustainable solutions (something I had been heavily involved with overseas). As someone who loves to solve problems I saw the amount of waste going to landfill here in NZ and I couldn’t just leave that issue as it was.

Chris and I do what we do best and came together to create a solution.

So CiRCLR was born.

CIRCLR offers a simple B2B system that encourages circular economies, which turns the existing cost of waste disposal into new revenue streams for businesses.

When you tell the kids just to dip their toes in but before long they are soaked 🤦‍♀️. Probably the worst part of travelling with kids who are not confident swimmers is that at every swimming stop a parent needs to jump in the water with them.

Us parents seem to feel the cold much more than the kids and it’s always a heated debate as to who’s turn it is to jump in.

It was a last minute decision to turn up towards Cape Karikari and for anyone travelling North I would say it is not to be missed.

First stop was Coca-Cola Lake. A place I had never heard of. The water is a yellowlish brown much like a watered down cola, after just dipping your feet in to test the temperature you really noticed your skin was much softer than before. It reminded me to a trip we took a few years ago to Saga in Japan. The little town we visited had geo thermal pools and I’m not sure what minerals were in this water but it left my skin feeling silky.

Lake Rotopokaka as it is officially known is believed by Maori to have healing powers. The way it makes your skin feel I would totally believe it!!

If travelling in a EV the nearest charging station is Coopers beach and I would recommend a quick recharge before heading up the peninsula.

Definitely a highlight of the kids Northland trip so we felt lucky we stopped at the Gumdiggers Park at Awanui.

Us parents learnt some great local history whilst the kids went wild yelling “Gum Hole!!” each time they spotted an old gum hole...and their were plenty to be found. To anybody walking through the park that day they may have thought the twins were just yelling profanities as that “G” sound was not so easily heard.

The best was when they called their grandparents and one twin explain they saw “a man stuck in the ‘bum’ hole”. Grandparents were confused and wondered what kind of places we had taken the kids I just left that one to the grandparents imagination.

It felt like we were walking on the moon!

Disclaimer:
I’ve been told I’m not allowed to show the video of the girls cheering on Chris as he holds his boogie board in front of him and yells “this is how you do it kids!”. Before he takes a massive leap to only land a foot in front of him hard on the sand.

Turns out there is a knack to boogie boarding down the sand dunes and Chris doesn’t have it, none of us did!

There was no sliding down the sand dunes at all, even a push didn’t help.

So Save yourself from being winded and possibly bruised ribs (and ego). See the Dune experts parked at the bottom of the dunes and get one of their boards! Once Chris was able to breath again he wished he had just hired a board from the pros.

Don’t be a Chris.

I’ve never visited sand dunes before so really had no idea what to expect.

I wasn’t too excited, I thought I had seen sand before so how different could this be...

The size of these dunes took me back. They are massive! They are hard to climb and the sand is just so fine.

The sunset from the top made us feel like we were walking on another planet. “Sand mountains” the kids called them. They were epic, a definite must see and a quick detour from the cape.

The kids were excited to boogie board down, I can’t recommend a quick visit here enough!

Made it to the Cape!

The little EV got us to the cape without issues and we had the paths and lighthouse all to ourselves.

Amazing lighting and waves today with visibility so clear the kids said they could see China. There were a few waves to their Ayi in Shanghai and lots of excitement.

Skipper had been to almost all of the light house sign posted places (except Bluff).

As a kiwi family who once’s loved to travel the world with our kids we are glad to be finally seeing more of NZ.

It was a epic journey which we definitely underestimated. A lot of hills and 3 fast charges were needed to get here.

A playground stop, a ice cream stop, and a lunch stop in between the charges had us arriving at the Cape 4 hours later than expected.

Some of the views were amazing and the kids just couldn’t believe they saw a desert (sand dunes).

Volcano obsessed skipper leatnt the sand had travelled here and formed dunes from volcanic activity in the central North Island. She hasn’t stopped talking about it.

A fab trip so far ❤️

A throw back to our last family holiday in Thailand...or is it?

Just kidding. Who needs Thailand when we have a heated pool here in beautiful Mangonui.

The kids have been up since 4:45am asking to go for a swim. I’m on my third coffee, the room has been turned upside down as the kids decided to dress them selves and Dads on a repacking mission.

I can highly recommend a stay at the family friendly Acacia Lodge Mangonui. Such friendly people here and thank fully I’m the only one complaining about my noisey excited kids.

I think I’ll be back here for a getaway and stellar local fish and chips!

To say I’m happy the day is over is a understatement.

The car was easy peasy. We had a quick charge with chargenet in Waipapa after leaving home and it allowed us to get to our accomodation and drive around for food and sight seeing without issues.

The kids on the other hand... 2 min from leaving home we decide to stop for a coffee and to grab a quick family photo in our hometown of Russell, at the iconic Duke of Marlborough hotel.

Whilst doing so one kid spills her fluffy down her top, another falls over on the road and the little one is apparently ‘starving’. We ate before we left home literally 5 min earlier but clearly a snack stop, a change of clothes and a band aid was needed already.

The car was a buzz with games of eye spy and songs. With one brief moment of bliss where all three had a speedy nap. I thought I would listen to a book I downloaded on audible I was clearly kidding myself.

It’s been a big day of playgrounds, beaches, swimming and quaint Northland towns.

Tomorrow we explore the Cape!

When you say 1....2....3 jump and no one jumps in time 😅.

I had to take the kids for a quick drive to Taipa.

One of my fondest memories as a kid was being taken here for a picnic by my Nana and Pop with my two cousins. Nana made us sandwiches and cut apples and wouldn’t tell us where we were going. They didn’t have much so this outing was a special treat for us .

Such a cute magical place ❤️
