Our little company, Monkeytronics, makes devices that log air quality in homes. Our customers run from public-health professors who wrote the textbook to parents who just want to know their kid's bedroom isn't freezing. Pulling those worlds together forced me to get four things straight.

Show the same chart to a professor and to a parent, and you get two opposite reactions. Both are right. But I think most home reporting serves neither.

3. A clearer measure is severity x duration i.e. how bad for how long. He Kāinga Oranga measure degree-hours below 18°C: every reading counts by how far under the line it sits and how long it stays there. That isn't a rival to the WHO's 18°C minimum: it's a rigorous way to apply it.

Tip number 2 from our resident Monkey, to help with measuring your homes healthiness.

2. For cold, use the right ruler.

A whole family of "comfort" standards is built on adaptive models. They let the acceptable indoor temperature drift down as it gets colder outside. Brilliant for predicting comfort. Wrong for winter health, because they relax exactly when a home gets dangerous.

If you're a curious George too, and you'd like to find out which air sensor is best for you and your family, we love a chat so get in touch!

Our little company, Monkeytronics, makes devices that log air quality in homes. Our customers run from public-health professors who wrote the textbook to parents who just want to know their kid's bedroom isn't freezing. Pulling those worlds together forced me to get four things straight.

Over the next few days, our resident Monkey is going to share a few tips with you.

1. Warmth is THE foundation of a healthy home.

Not one factor among many. It's the key determinant. Cold homes drive respiratory and cardiovascular illness, raise blood pressure, worsen asthma. He Kāinga Oranga (Uni of Otago) have spent decades proving it. So don't listen to us: listen to them!

We all love our furry friends, and take great care to keep them extra safe, so having an air quality sensor in your home, not only benefits you, but your pets too.

We recommend that our pets’ ‘home away from home’ environments have air quality sensors too. Places like

🐇Vets
🐈Catteries
🐕‍🦺Kennels.

Keeping an eye on temperature, CO2, humidity, sound and lighting can really help to keep pets happy and safe, especially during times of stress.

There is currently a heatwave running through the UK, Ireland and Europe, which got me thinking how tough it can be on the air you breathe when it’s scorching hot, too.

Monitoring your air quality in your home, school, workplace, is super important during the summer heat, not just the colder months.

You want to:

🐵Keep an eye on humidity to keep it within optimum levels, so you can keep cool, and not put extra stress on your body, possibly causing dehydration.

🐵Make sure the temperature isn’t too hot in the classroom or workplace to keep concentration levels high and prevent heatstroke and heat exhaustion.

🐵Ensure CO2 levels are optimum so you’re breathing fresh air, not concentrated CO2 levels, that could cause headaches, grogginess, and in extreme cases dizziness.

These are some of the things to help with the health & safety of the people and pets that you care about. Not to mention the healthiness of the buildings, too.

Take care out there

When your home is warm, dry and well-ventilated, it helps to keep you, and your home healthy and well.

There are things you can do that don’t cost anything, and will make a big difference for you.

Here are some tips just for you

🐵If you notice a draught coming in under your door, pop a draught stopper or a rolled up dry towel along the bottom of the door.
🐵Hang your clothes to dry outside if possible.
🐵Open your doors and windows to let fresh air through your home, even just for 10 minutes.
🐵Wipe condensation off your windows in the morning with a towel or sponge.
🐵Open your blinds or curtains in the morning to let the sun heat your home.
🐵At night, close your curtains to keep the heat in.

Stay warm and dry - you and your home will thank you.

Do you like to:

🐵Sit in front of a cosy fire
🐵Use a heatpump
🐵Have radiators throughout your home
🐵Use a portable gas, oil or, space heater
🐵Use something else

Or do you just prefer to layer up?

We'd love to know in the comments what your preference is.

Another awesome feature we’ve added, and this is very cool, you can change the background colour of the screen of your unit, from the app. Maybe you want it darker for a bedroom, or a splash of colour for your lounge. Whichever you prefer, for wherever in your house, office, school…you now have more choice.

Check out these options. We'd love to know what colour you'd choose, let us know in the comments.

Some really exciting stuff is happening over at the Monkeytronics hub, and we’re going bananas waiting to launch. I’ve just got to share a little insight into what’s coming your way on our new, improved, and awesome app.

We’ve taken note of everything our customers have said over the years and we’ve learnt a lot from the previous apps we’ve had running.

Now we have a completely reimaged way we’re going to interact with data and how we can use it more proactively.

You can now do amazing things with the new app, in terms of notifications, reporting, and sharing data with colleagues, friends, and family. And grouping your devices together in order to create coherent data stories…the list goes on and we’re really excited.

If you’re already a Monkeytronics user, pop us an email if you’d like to start using our new app before it’s released. Or give us a call, we’re always happy to chat.
