Proud to be backing Tussock Country - NZ's Country Music Festival 💛

We'd never been along to a Tussock Country event until yesterday, when we headed to the Ute Muster. A super fun, family day out with utes of all shapes and sizes + prizes for best Dog in Ute and Best Mullet!

All things Tussock Country - NZ's Country Music Festival have kicked off in Gore and we can't wait to head to the Ute Muster tomorrow - an event that we're proud to support here at SouthTech 🛻

Sunday 24 May 2026 - Southern Field Days Shed:
- Ute registrations: 11.30am - 12.30pm.
- Onsite entertainment during judging: 12.30pm - 1.30pm​

🔵 You started this business from the ground up, when you look back on that time now - what advice would you share with others wanting to start a business?

Starting from the ground up requires real resilience. My biggest advice is to prepare for the long game - it often takes more time, stress, and sleepless nights than you’d expect to find your feet. Stay patient and keep your eyes on the goal; the hard work is worth it once you see the business succeed.

🔵 What does being part of the local community mean to you?

To me, it’s all about that sense of belonging. Southland is home, and being part of this community means more than just doing business here - it’s about having the opportunity to give back and support the local groups and organisations within our region.

Get to know Stew from SouthTech ⚙️

🔵 What does a day in the life look like for you?

Breakfast then in the office by 8:30am latest (I’m not a morning person!) Following up emails/client enquiries first, then checking with my team to make sure they have everything they need for the day. Normally I visit a couple of clients to scope out a couple of jobs, then back to the office to draw up the quotes that we need to send out.

Throughout the day I’m dealing with calls and questions and if the fire siren goes off I have to drop everything and go. Quite often I’m on the road looking after clients all the way from Gore to Milford Sound. I much prefer to catch up with clients in person rather than via email etc.

🔵 Tell us more about the local fire sirens!? 🚒

I’ve been volunteering with the Winton Fire Brigade for just over 20 years, achieving the rank of Station Officer 3 years ago. It can be challenging to be on call when you’re a business owner but it’s such an essential way to look after our locals. I’m proud to be a small part of it and we have a great team in our brigade.

🔵 What does being part of the local community mean to you?

We try to give back via sponsorship etc to local groups as much as we can. We currently sponsor Midlands Rugby, Central Netball Umpires and Tussock Country Music Festival, together with other small organisations. Without small businesses supporting local events and teams, those parts of life that we all love and get so much value from won’t exist anymore, so I urge people to keep it local and support the local businesses that support their own communities!

Milford Road Merchant in Te Anau, Blatch Bros in Winton, Coffee Bomb in Garston and the SD Café in Milford!
