Our colleagues from ICDL Europe participated in the international conference in Valencia, Spain with the presentation “Bridging the Digital Skills Gap: Perception, Reality, and the Role of Certification.”

Across education, industry, and society, a persistent challenge continues to undermine digital readiness: the gap between how people perceive their digital skills and their actual ability to use technology effectively. Research shows individuals tend to overestimate their competence. Young people, often assumed to be “digital natives,” show skills gaps as wide as those of older generations. This disconnect is amplified by the widespread use of self reported indicators, which fail to measure real proficiency. Only practical, task based assessment can accurately capture true digital capability. Learn more https://lnkd.in/diy8E39k

What level of digital skills do we have?

ICDL Foundation has conducted digital literacy studies, over the years, in different countries, analysing the difference between a first self-assessment of digital skills and the real level, assessed by a practical test. The results revealed that people tend to overestimate their capabilities and that significant digital skills gaps exist in all the countries analysed, and also among young people. This updated report includes new studies from ICDL and other international reports.

The ICDL Foundation and its National Operators conducted digital literacy studies in five European countries (Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, and Switzerland) and two countries outside Europe (India and Singapore). The studies consisted of two key parts: a first self-assessment phase and a secon...

The recent World Economic Forum "The Future of Jobs Report 2025" highlights that "Broadening digital access is expected to be the most transformative trend – both across technology-related trends and overall – with 60% of employers expecting it to transform their business by 2030. Advancements in technologies, particularly AI and information processing (86%); robotics and automation (58%); and energy generation, storage and distribution (41%), are also expected to be transformative.

These trends are expected to have a divergent effect on jobs, driving both the fastest-growing and fastest-declining roles, and fueling demand for technology-related skills, including AI and big data, networks and cybersecurity and technological literacy, which are anticipated to be the top three fastest- growing skills.

On average, workers can expect 39% of their existing skill sets will be transformed or become outdated over the 2025-2030 period

Given these evolving skill demands, the scale of workforce upskilling and reskilling expected to be needed remains significant: if the world’s workforce was made up of 100 people, 59 would need training by 2030"
