If you've ever put stickers on your laptop, please check the bottom before reading this.

A woman brought her gaming laptop to a repair shop complaining that it kept overheating during use. The technician took one look at the bottom of the device and fixed the problem in under ten seconds.

She had covered the cooling vents with decorative stickers.

The video of the repair, shared on Reddit's r/pcmasterrace community, received over 48,000 interactions and sparked a wave of responses from people who admitted they had no idea laptop vents even existed, let alone that blocking them could cause serious damage.

The technician peeled off the sticker covering the main vent, and the laptop could immediately be heard breathing again. The woman then removed the remaining stickers from the bottom of the device herself.

It's an easy mistake to make, especially if you're coming from a phone or a MacBook Air, both of which use passive cooling with no fans and no vents to worry about. Gaming laptops are a completely different situation. They generate enormous amounts of heat under load and depend entirely on unobstructed airflow to stay cool.

When those vents are blocked, even partially, the heat has nowhere to go. The processor throttles its performance trying to protect itself, fans spin faster and louder, and over time the sustained heat can cause permanent damage to internal components.

The bottom of a laptop is the single most important place to keep clear. It's also the place most people never think about when decorating their device.

If you want to personalize your laptop safely, the back of the lid is the ideal surface for stickers. It's completely clear of any functional components and won't interfere with airflow, cooling, ports, speakers, or any other part of the machine.

Vinyl skins made specifically for laptops are another safe option. They're designed to avoid vents and ports and can be removed cleanly without leaving adhesive residue.

The woman's laptop survived the ordeal without any lasting damage. Not everyone is so lucky.
