Seeing the Invisible
Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

2 Corinthians 4:15-18


For Formula One driver, Ayrton Senna, 1991 was a banner year. He was defending his title as world champion from the year before, and he started the season with four straight wins. The most notable of those was the Brazil Grand Prix, where Senna delighted his home country by taking the checkered flag. But what the screaming fans did not realize was that Senna's car gear box had broken during the race. Unable to shift normally Senna had spent the final laps wrestling his car around corners. No one knew how badly his hands and arms had been cramping until he made his way to the winner's podium but was unable to lift the trophy in celebration.

It is very rare for anything of real value to be accomplished easily. In almost every case we must labor and persevere and endure hardship to reach the goal set before us. But if we are committed to what we are trying to do and understand its purpose and value, we will not be deterred by difficulty. God gives us both the purpose and the power to remain steadfast in our lives and work for Him. Even if the task is too much for us, His ability makes it possible for us to continue. “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 15:58).
