How design can support your advocacy strategy ? 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♂️

When you spend time researching, digesting, thinking and eventually writing about something important to you or your organisation, you will likely want people to not only read what you have done but to quickly understand and subsequently recall it. That’s where the value is.

When 55% of people spend fewer than fifteen seconds on a page before deciding if it is worth their time or not, there must be an immediate hook. If someone lands on an article and there is no title in sight, they may think they are in the wrong place and leave. If they see an enormous chunk of unstructured black text on a white page, they may feel overwhelmed and leave. A title in the correct place, an image, colour, and clearly separated paragraphs are the absolute basic necessities.

Why do you need a logo? Here are 3 really good reasons:

1. Reveals your identity 🎭
Remember those old Westerns where cowboys branded cattle? They did it to mark ownership. Your logo should do the same thing (minus the pain of a red hot branding iron). Imprinted on your products, your business card and your website, your logo communicates ownership. It can tell the world/potential customers who you are, what type of product or service you sell, or what benefit you offer consumers.

2. Invites new customers to get to know you 🤝
We don’t live in a monochromatic world. People are drawn to interesting design and color. The logo that marks your package or adorns your storefront should be designed to draw interest and pique the curiosity of your potential customers, prompting them to at least look, and hopefully purchase your product.

3. Distinguishes you from the competition 🏆
There are certain symbols that come to represent particular industries or products. For example, how many pizza places have you seen with a logo that features an Italian, mustachioed chef with a tall white hat and a wide grin? Maybe holding a ridiculously huge pizza? A good logo reflects who you are, but it should also distinguish you from everybody else. A good logo should dare to be different.

Rules for better EDITORIAL design

01. Identify your audience and design for them 🎨
This is the most important rule really, whether you're launching a new publication or moving into a design role at an existing title, it's imperative that you know your audience and design for them accordingly.

02. Take the right cover approach 📔
There are many and varied approaches to cover design but when starting a mag from scratch a good rule of thumb is to design the cover first and let that inform the design of the inside. There's no paint-by-numbers formula to designing a great cover (although people may try to tell you otherwise). It's a combination of working with a great idea in the first place, having the best possible assets and perhaps also a touch of magic.

03. Always think cross platform 🕸️
Whether you design for print or tablet first or work on them both in tangent, it's important that your designs work across all platforms in a unified way without the design and visual language feeling disjointed.
A good practice is to design for digital first and get the usability right as its often much easier translating that to a static page than the other way around. Also think about how commissions can work across different platforms, if you're commissioning illustration is there an opportunity to add in some animation for the digital version? Perhaps a boxout talking head in print could be a real talking head video on iPad?
