Jake Ruiz Graphic Design

Jake Ruiz Graphic Design Creative designs and visual identity tailored for personal and corporate branding services. So yeah, again, I design a ton of stuff.

Now that I’ve just turned 30 years old, I think that these works represent the different facets and versatility as a graphic designer through the years — collaborating with various organizations and causes here in the Philippines. I design based on what is needed while injecting my personal touch and aesthetic into it. Be it a formal organization manual to digital artwork with flamboyant and eccentric design elements — I will adapt.

Just in time for the Negros Trade Fair happening at Glorietta, Makati from September 25-29, here’s a project close to my heart: a logo I designed for NVC Foundation - Negrense Volunteers for Change, a non-profit organization based in Bacolod City, Philippines.

Their core mission is to fight hunger and poverty by providing proper nutrition and access to quality education for children of the poor. To visualize this, I created a logo composed of malunggay leaves in the form of a flying butterfly in shades of green. The leaves represent nourishment while also paying tribute to the organization’s core nutrition product - Minggo (monggo + malunggay). The butterfly represents the call-to-action of NVC volunteers to go out and “fly” to help those in need. It soars high and free, representing NVC’s goal to feed as many children and families as they could.

I also developed a brand manual for easy application and usage on marketing collateral and materials.

For their 2017 Annual Report, Maynilad Water Services, Inc.'s key message was to Stay the Course. While 2017 was a challenging year, Maynilad rose above the turbulent business environment and remained focused on meeting their goals with a clear roadmap for sustained growth while maintaining their strong commitment to meet service obligations.

To communicate this message, I designed a cover which highlights a water trail emanating from a boat to signify “staying on course”. Creative use and variation of typography with a clean layout and infographics were implemented for the content layout and design.

Innovation for Change - East Asia launched an infographic series on in East Asia, following a Workshop on Combatting Disinformation for journalists, digital rights activists, and human rights defenders. The series aims to raise and spread awareness on the phenomenon of disinformation in East Asia and how it negatively impacts the life of people, communities, and nations.

Based on the workshop insights, I designed five stand-alone but related infographics focused on the following disinformation sub-themes below.

It's Taco Tuesday! 🌮

Sharing a visual identity and brand design I made for Tacoway, a modern Fil-Mex restaurant proudly hailing from Legazpi, Albay. The logo is inspired by retro roadside joints and of course, the iconic Mayon Volcano.

MYNP is the first book of the MYNP Makeyournanayproud aimed at promoting its advocacy for mothers released back in 2014. With renowned personality Boy Abunda at the helm, the book is a collection of testimonials from different well-known personalities (celebrities, athletes, politicians, etc.) about their love for their mothers. I designed the book with a unique layout for each person, with around 80 testimonials for the whole book.

I designed MYNP with the testimonials in mind, coming up with ways on creatively juxtaposing the messages with photographs of each personality and their moms. I wanted to honor the relationships between mother and child, and therefore found ways to work around the challenge of personal photos submitted, some of which were in low resolution. To do this, stylized photo treatments and typographic elements came into play.

The book was a certified hit, and was on the National Book store best-seller before it eventually sold-out.

Sharing my work for Innovation for Change - East Asia on their Infographic Series on in East Asia. The series aims to raise and spread awareness on the phenomenon of disinformation in East Asia and how it negatively impacts the life of people, communities, and nations.

With the current news and events in our country and all over the world, this has never been more timely. Shared here is the first infographic of the series--sources of disinformation. is on the rise and its sources knowingly spread untruths, incite hate, demonize an 'other', counter facts with appeals to emotion, circumvent explanations by misdirecting public opinion or attention towards other issues, and in worse cases, revise history with fabricated lies spread virally in through content farms, bots, and online armies that help magnify the issue until it passes off as the truth.

Following the Workshop on Combatting Disinformation co-organized in 2018, Innovation for Change - East Asia presents an infographic series to enable information sharing and greater understanding of the phenomenon of disinformation and how it negatively impacts the lives of people, communities, and nations. The first in the series focuses on the identified sources of disinformation.

So mom was cleaning up the house and handed this to me—my design portfolio back in 08' consisting of works during my college years.

As much as I cringe on how some works looked like, it feels good seeing where you started, seeing as how you evolved from that point in your career, to where you are today and the skills you've learned along the way.

Everyone starts from somewhere, the important thing is to never stop learning and to always strive for your next work to be better than your last.

The grid is one of the most important aspects to make aesthetically-pleasing and orderly layouts. It creates order among elements in the design, and promotes an overall consistency for a document.

If used properly, it could do wonders to the overall design. Sometimes, it's the little things that make the overall picture a better one.
