A ham radio repeater extends the communication range of handheld and mobile radios by receiving a signal on one frequency and retransmitting it on another. The repeater is usually installed on a tall tower, hill, or mountain to provide wide area coverage. When Operator A transmits on the uplink frequency, the repeater receives the signal through its receiver. A duplexer allows the receiver and transmitter to share the same antenna while keeping the transmit and receive signals isolated. The controller manages the repeater's operation, and the amplifier boosts the signal before the transmitter sends it back on the downlink frequency. Operator B receives the stronger retransmitted signal, even if the two operators are too far apart or blocked by buildings, hills, or other obstacles. Many repeaters also include backup battery power to keep operating during power outages. Ham radio repeaters are widely used for emergency communications, public service events, disaster response, and everyday amateur radio conversations because they greatly improve coverage, reliability, and communication distance.
