Instagram wordmark rebranded - why?

According to Meta and Instagram leadership, the change was driven by several strategic goals:

👉 A Necessary Refresh
👉 Honoring Heritage
👉 Focus on Individual Expression
👉 Part of a Larger System

But, is it really necessary?

The reality of rebranding is it’s rarely about fixing what’s broken; it’s about staying agile for the next generation of users.

Personally?

I think it feels fresh, even if the legibility takes a hit. The letter "r" looks like letter "z" on majority of designer perception. But overall, for me, it feels fresh and captivating.

Are 2D logos a thing of the past? 🤔

Here’s my take: 2D designs bring depth through illustration, custom shapes, and vibrant creative detail. It focuses on detailed artwork, illustrations, layered shapes, and color gradients to express character, story, and personality. When done right, they give a brand a truly unique voice 💯

So yes, 2D logos still work if they genuinely fit the client's vision. But as a designer, it’s also our job to offer direction. If long-term versatility and a timeless feel are the top priorities, guiding them toward a solid, minimal approach is always worth the conversation✌
