Simple Habits to Stay Safe Online

Cybersecurity hygiene is about the daily habits that protect your digital life.

✔️ Use Strong Passwords
Create long, unique passwords for every account.
Avoid reusing passwords and consider using a password manager.

✔️ Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Add an extra layer of protection to your accounts.
MFA helps block access even if passwords are compromised.

✔️ Think Before You Click
Be cautious with emails, links, and attachments.
Phishing messages often look urgent or legitimate.

✔️ Keep your devices and apps updated
Install updates regularly to fix security vulnerabilities.
Outdated systems are easy targets for attackers.

🚨 Most Common Cyber Attacks

Cyber attacks are attempts to steal data, disrupt systems, or gain unauthorized access. Knowing common types helps protect yourself and your organization.

1️⃣ Phishing & Social Engineering

What: Trick users into giving sensitive information.
Example: Fake email asking to “reset your password.”
Prevent: Verify links, awareness, use email filters.

2️⃣ Malware

What: Malicious programs that damage or spy on devices.
Example: Installing a trojan disguised as legitimate software.
Prevent: Use antivirus, update systems, avoid untrusted downloads.

3️⃣ Ransomware

What: Encrypts files and demands payment.
Example: Opening a malicious attachment that locks your documents.
Prevent: Regular backups, patching, limited admin access.

4️⃣ Password Attacks

What: Attempting to access accounts by guessing or reusing passwords.
Example: Logging in with stolen or reused credentials.
Prevent: Use strong, unique passwords and enable MFA.

5️⃣ Business Email Compromise (BEC)

What: Pretending to be executives to trick employees into sending money or sensitive data.
Example: An email “from the CEO” asking for an urgent payment.
Prevent: Verify requests, use email authentication, and train staff.

6️⃣ DDoS / DoS

What: Overwhelms systems to cause downtime.
Example: Website crashes due to massive fake traffic.
Prevent: DDoS protection, traffic filtering, redundant systems.

7️⃣ Vulnerability Exploitation

What: Exploiting software flaws to gain access.
Example: Unpatched server attacked via known flaw.
Prevent: Regular patching, scanning, intrusion detection.

8️⃣ Insider Threats

What: Employees accidentally or maliciously expose data.
Example: Sharing sensitive files outside the company.
Prevent: Least-privilege access, monitoring, policies.

The CIA Triad (Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability)

The CIA Triad is a foundational cybersecurity model that guides how information should be protected. It focuses on three core principles that every secure system must balance:

🔐 Confidentiality

Ensures that information is only accessible to authorized users and protected from unauthorized disclosure.

How it’s achieved:

Encryption: Converting readable data into an unreadable format that requires a key to unlock.

MFA: Requiring multiple forms of verification to access an account.

Access Control: Using the "Principle of Least Privilege" to limit user permissions.

Example: An employee accesses company email using a password and a physical security key. Even if a hacker steals the password, they cannot access the account without the physical key, keeping the data confidential.

✔️ Integrity

Ensures that data remains accurate, complete, and unaltered unless modified by authorized users.

How it’s achieved:

Hashing: Using algorithms (like SHA-256) to verify that a file hasn't been changed.

Digital Signatures: Validating the authenticity and origin of a document.

Audit Logs: Keeping a strict record of who changed what and when.

Example: In electronic voting systems, integrity ensures that every vote is recorded exactly as cast and cannot be altered or deleted. If vote data is tampered with, it could change election outcomes, undermining trust in the entire system.

⏱️ Availability

Ensures that systems, applications, and data are accessible to authorized users whenever they are needed.

How it’s achieved:

Redundancy: Having backup hardware or "failover" systems ready to take over.

DDoS Protection: filtering out malicious traffic to prevent a system from being overwhelmed and forced offline

Backups: Maintaining off-site copies of data for quick recovery after a disaster.

Example: A company website remains online during high traffic because it uses load balancing to distribute traffic across redundant servers.

🛡️ Stay Safe Online: Essential Cybersecurity Tips

Protecting your online accounts doesn’t have to be complicated. By following these simple but effective cybersecurity practices, you can significantly reduce the risk of unauthorized access and data loss.

✅ Use Strong, Unique Passwords
Create a different, complex password for every account. Using a password manager helps generate and securely store passwords, preventing one breach from compromising all your accounts.

✅ Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Add an extra layer of security by enabling MFA on important accounts like email and banking. Apps like Google Authenticator or SMS codes make it much harder for attackers to get in.

✅ Keep Your Software Updated
Regularly update your operating system, apps, and antivirus software. Updates patch security vulnerabilities that hackers commonly exploit.

✅ Recognize Phishing Attempts
Be cautious of unexpected emails, messages, or links. Watch for misspellings, urgent requests, and suspicious URLs—these are common tactics used to steal login credentials.

✅ Back Up Your Data
Protect your files by backing them up regularly using the 3-2-1 rule:
• 3 copies of your data
• 2 different storage types
• 1 copy stored off-site
