Your laptop doesn't overheat because it's old. It overheats because something inside stopped doing its job.
Most people live with a hot laptop for months. They prop it up on books, aim a desk fan at it, lower the graphics settings, close extra tabs. They work around it instead of fixing it β because they assume overheating means the laptop is done.
It usually isn't.
This ASUS FX505D came in running dangerously hot. Thermal throttling under load. Unexpected shutdowns. A client who had been managing around the problem instead of solving it.
We opened it up. Here's what three years of unserviced use looked like inside:
Finding 1 β A CPU fan with broken blades
Not worn. Not slow. Broken. A fan with missing or fractured blades doesn't just move less air β it creates turbulence instead of directed airflow, runs unbalanced, and accelerates bearing wear on everything around it. This was the primary reason the laptop couldn't cool itself under any load.
A broken fan blade is invisible from the outside. You can't hear it clearly over normal laptop noise. You only find it when you open the machine.
Finding 2 β Thermal paste that had turned to powder
Thermal paste is the compound that transfers heat from the processor surface to the copper heatsink above it. Fresh paste is a semi-liquid β it fills microscopic gaps and conducts heat efficiently. Aged paste dries, cracks, and pulls away from the surfaces it's supposed to bridge.
At that point it stops conducting heat. It insulates it. The processor sits trapped under a heatsink it can no longer communicate with thermally.
Finding 3 β Thermal pads compressed past their service life
The GPU and supporting components use thermal pads β flat sheets of thermally conductive material β instead of paste. These compress under pressure over time, harden, and eventually create air gaps between the component and the heatsink.
Air is one of the worst thermal conductors in existence. Every air gap is a heat trap.
Three problems. All invisible from the outside. All contributing simultaneously.
This is why overheating laptops need to be opened and diagnosed β not assumed to be aging out.
What we did:
π§ Full disassembly β every component exposed, inspected, documented
π§ Old thermal paste removed completely β surfaces cleaned to bare metal
π§ Fresh thermal compound applied β correct coverage, correct pressure on reassembly
π§ Thermal pads replaced on all contact surfaces β GPU, VRM, supporting chipsets
π§ CPU fan β correct replacement unit ordered from our supplier, installed on arrival
π§ Full load test post-assembly β temperatures monitored until confirmed stable
On the fan: We ordered the exact-specification replacement for the FX505D β not a generic substitute. We gave the client a completion date at the time of diagnosis. Not "we'll call you." A date. We hit it.
That's how we work.
The ASUS FX505D is a capable gaming laptop. Ryzen 5 processor, dedicated GPU, built for performance. It didn't need replacing. It needed someone to open it up, find everything that was wrong β not just the obvious thing β and fix all of it properly.
If your laptop runs hot, throttles during gaming or work, or shuts down without warning β bring it in before you write it off.
