One Chinese city is set to build a pair of "vertical forest" skyscrapers, replete with 1,100 trees and 2,500 cascading shrubs and plants. Capable of 25 tons of CO2 absorption each year and producing a claimed 60 kg of oxygen per day, the two buildings will help fight China's air pollution.
Designed by Italian architect Stefano Boeri, Nanjing Green Towers will be a mix of office space, a Hyatt hotel with 247 rooms, a museum, and a green architecture school when completed in 2018, according to a statement from his company.
Boeri is also planning vertical forest towers in Italy and Switzerland. After the Nanjing project, he's eyeing new buildings in five other Chinese cities, including one in Shanghai.
