Thalassemia is a blood disorder that is usually passed down through families ( Inherited). In Thalassemia the body produces an abnormal type of hemoglobin which is formed by different kind of cell chains than the usual format.
Thalassemia Minor is just a trait that the person may carry without it interfering with the usual routine and well being of that person. But if a Thalassemia Minor has a partner who is also Thalassemia Minor then there are chances of their baby to be affected. There are 25% chances that this child could be a Thalassemia Major ( which is a disease), 50% chance that the child might also be a Thalassemia Minor ( which is not really a concern) and 25% chances are that the child would be absolutely Normal.
Thalassemia can be detected by a simple normal blood test. It is advisable to take this blood test while deciding your partner , if not then, alteast have the test done while pregnancy to avoid any
