In February 2024, Google launched image generation inside Gemini.

Within days, users were posting screenshots.

Ask it to generate a historical figure. A Founding Father. A World War II soldier. A medieval knight. The model kept producing images that had no relationship to the historical reality of those people and those moments.

It was not a small edge case. It was consistent enough that it became a news cycle.

Google paused the feature entirely while the team went back in.

The problem was not that the model was trying to be inclusive. Representation in AI outputs is a real and important design goal. The problem was that the model had been tuned so hard in one direction that it lost the ability to ask a basic question: what does accuracy require here?

Historical content is not a neutral prompt. It carries context. Period. Geography. Documented record. When a model ignores that context in favor of a pattern it has been rewarded for, you do not get inclusivity. You get hallucination with good intentions behind it.

The engineers who built Gemini are not careless. This was a calibration failure, not a character failure. But calibration failures at product launch, in front of millions of users, cost trust fast.

The lesson was not "do not try to reduce bias in AI outputs." The lesson was that accuracy and inclusivity are not in competition. They are both constraints. A well-built model holds both at the same time.

If it cannot, it is not ready.
