Center for Language Engineering (CLE) is conducting research and development in linguistic and computational aspects of languages, specifically of Pakistan and developing Asia. The center also actively arranges and participates in seminars, workshops and conferences dedicated to promote language processing nationally and internationally.

The CLE Postgraduate Certificate in Optical Character Recognition (OCR) was held from 22 to 24 October 2026, organized in collaboration with the SNLP - Society for Natural Language Processing, Pakistan (SNLP). The course also welcomed participants from our DigSAL partner, the University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka.

The course was delivered by Dr. Qurat-ul-Ain Akram, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Engineering, UET Lahore, a Specialist in document processing and digitisation. Across three intensive days, participants learned scanned document preparation, modern OCR tools, AI-based text refinement, and end-to-end text extraction workflows through hands-on practice.

On 24 October, the programme closed with a certificate distribution ceremony, where Prof. Dr. Kashif Javed, Chairman of the Department of Computer Engineering at UET Lahore, presented certificates to the participants. The day also featured a CLE Open House, where our researchers showcased their language technology projects and applications.

A delegation from the University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka, visited Center for Language Engineering (CLE), KICS, UET Lahore, from 21 to 24 October 2026 for the annual project meeting of the DAAD-funded project “DigSAL: Addressing the Digital Divide for South Asian Languages.”

During the visit, the team held a productive discussion with Prof. Dr. Shahzad Asif, Director, AL Khawarizmi Institute of Computer science, UET Lahore (KICS), on project progress and future collaboration. They also took part in a meet-up with Sri Lankan alumni and students at UET Lahore.

We thank our colleagues from Jaffna for their visit and look forward to strengthening this partnership.

🎉 We are pleased to share that a team from the Center for Language Engineering (CLE), KICS, UET Lahore successfully participated in the 31st International Lexical Functional Grammar Conference (LFG2026), held at the Department of Computer Science, University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka.

🌍 The conference brought together linguists and computational researchers from around the world through keynote talks, technical sessions, and a dedicated workshop on argument structure, providing a valuable platform for discussions on advances in linguistic theory and computational language research.

🤝 Following the conference, Dr. Sana Shams represented CLE as an invited panel member at the CHiPSAL Symposium 2026: Challenges in Processing South Asian Languages. The symposium brought together linguists, NLP researchers, students, and language technology practitioners to explore the linguistic and computational challenges of South Asian languages and discuss emerging research directions.

💡 As part of the visit, the team also visited the University of Moratuwa, Colombo, where they held an interactive technical session with Computer Science students. Discussions focused on LLMs and fine-tuning for different domains, as well as ASR and speech technologies for South Asian languages, language-specific evaluation, and student FYPs. Students shared their projects and challenges, while the CLE team provided feedback and practical insights from their experience. Contacts were also exchanged for continued guidance and collaboration.

👏 We are grateful to the organizers, participating institutions, researchers, and students for the valuable discussions and opportunities for academic and research exchange. We look forward to strengthening collaborations in computational linguistics, NLP, and language technologies for South Asian languages.
