In February and March of 1953, Majlis-e-Ahrar demanded the dismissal of Muhammad Zafarullah Khan, an Ahmadi and the then Foreign Minister of Pakistan. Khawaja Nazimuddin's (the then PM) refusal to do so led to fierce protests in Lahore. Lahore saw loss of life, arson, destruction and military takeover as martial law was declared across the city.

Plotree's project with LUMS maps the key events of the 1953 Anti-Ahmadi protests, shedding light to an a major event in Lahore's history that is often forgotten.

The Jalianwala Bagh massare is often remembered as a dark chapter in British Colonial History. But as protests were rising in Amritsar against the Rowlatt Acts, what ensued in the twin city of Lahore as the Imperial government imposed martial law?

Did you know that in the first half of 20th Century, Lahore was a center for Hindu reform movements such as the Arya Samaj which claimed to have the ideological strength to address the caste issue in Hindu traditions

Also that radical Arya Samajis in Lahore had founded an organization 'Jat-Pat-Todak Mandal', vehemently opposed to caste system. The Mandal had also invited Ambedkar, the author of the Indian constitution to deliver a lecture titled 'The Annihilation of caste' in 1935. The lecture which was later cancelled by the Mandal itself owing to its radical nature

Did you know that Arya Samajis founded the D.A.V (Dyananda Anglo Vedic) Schools and Colleges. The current Islamia college in our city was once the famous D.A.V College.

Did you know of the pre-partition Hindu led Urdu Dailies Milap, Pratap and Bandematram which give a glimpse of politics of Punjabi Hindus before partition.

Our latest project with LUMS takes us back to a time when the Hindus of Lahore were a vibrant part of city's social, religious, and political landscape. The city was central to various intra-Hindu polemics, religious reform movements, and nationalist politics.

This project is a part of "Walking in the city", a set of archival stories developed as a part of a course on Lahore's cultural and social history taught by Dr Ali Usman Qasmi. The projects are based on student course work.

Our latest project is a series of interactive webpages and curated projects that feature student-led research on various aspects of Lahore's social, cultural and political history. These works are based on student assignments from a course taught by Dr Ali Usman Qasmi at LUMS in Fall 2019.

Plotree is an Information Design studio in Lahore. At plotree, we make web based interactive data visualization. We also make custom dashboards with dynamic graphics for our clients. We use Data Driven Documents or D3.js to design our visualizations.
