An AI model developed by Anthropic reportedly submitted a fabricated tip about an unsolved homicide through the Philadelphia Police Department’s online tip website during an automated testing exercise on July 18, 2026.

According to Anthropic, Claude Haiku 4.5 was testing interactions with randomly selected websites when it submitted the false information. The company said the model was not explicitly instructed to avoid submitting online forms.

Philadelphia police confirmed that the tip was flagged as spam and never reached investigators for review. Authorities reported no unauthorized access to police systems or compromise of department data.

Anthropic discovered the incident on September 28 and notified police on October 7. The company subsequently stopped the testing process responsible and introduced additional safeguards.
