Visiting a potential EMS partner? 5 non-obvious things to check if you want real accountability — not just promises.

Choosing an EMS partner isn’t about ticking boxes or admiring glossy production lines. It’s about knowing who will pick up the phone when your project hits turbulence — and who actually has the power to fix it.

Here’s what to focus on during your next factory visit:

1️⃣ Who will be your dedicated manager — and do they have real power, or just a title?

Not an anonymous account handler, but a named, responsible person who knows your product, your timeline, and your priorities. Someone who has both operational knowledge and the authority to act — fast.

2️⃣ When things go wrong, can you reach a decision-maker directly?

In a true partnership, escalation isn’t a process — it’s a direct line. Can you call the person who actually decides? Or are you stuck waiting in line while your issue is escalated up a corporate food chain?

3️⃣ Who owns the business — and who really controls strategy?

When you sign the contract, do you shake hands with the CEO? The best EMS partners are owner-managed, with clear strategic focus and decisions made close to the production floor — not in distant boardrooms, subject to dividend pressures and shareholder politics.

4️⃣ Do they own their production site — or is everything leased?

Does your EMS own its land and production assets, or does it lease and rent everything it touches? Do they openly share financial data — or does transparency stop at marketing slides?

And crucially — is EMS their core business, or just a side gig next to product sales that inflate their turnover? Real EMS stands on its own. No tricks, no inflated numbers.

5️⃣ What’s the culture — real commitment, or just polite hospitality?

First impressions matter more than you think. Do you feel real engagement — people who want your business and are proud of what they do?
Or is the atmosphere defensive, scripted, and cold? Teams that care show it — in how they greet you, how they answer tough questions, and how they talk about their own work.

Real accountability starts long before the first order. It starts with how much they’re willing to show — and who you’re allowed to meet...

Choosing an EMS partner? Everyone talks about these… But here’s what no one tells you.

When selecting an Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) provider, you’ll hear the same advice over and over:
✅ Make sure they are flexible
✅ Check their scalability
✅ Assess their risk management strategy
✅ Ensure they have quality certifications
✅ Look at their pricing structure

We get it, these are table stakes now. Every serious EMS provider claims they check these boxes.

❗ But if you stop your evaluation there, you're not gaining any real competitive edge.

So let’s go deeper into what’s not being talked about:

1️⃣ Do They Challenge You?
A good EMS partner doesn’t just say “yes” to everything. They push back. They ask why. They tell you if your design is flawed, if your component selection is risky, or if your forecast is unrealistic - before it’s too late.

💡 If your EMS provider never questions your decisions, they’re an order taker, not a partner.

2️⃣ How Do They Handle Uncomfortable Situations?
Anyone can shine in perfect conditions. But what happens when:
🔹 There’s a critical component shortage?
🔹 A quality issue arises post-production?
🔹 A last-minute design change disrupts everything?

Watch how they react when things go wrong - that’s where true partnership is built.

3️⃣ What’s Their Real Business Model?
Not every EMS provider wants to grow with you. Some thrive on low-margin, high-volume work. Others specialize in high-mix, low-volume projects. Some prioritize customers who fit their long-term vision.

🚨 If you’re not their ideal customer, you’ll never get their full attention - no matter how much you pay.

4️⃣ Do You Have a Dedicated Project Manager?
The best EMS providers ensure your project has a dedicated manager—not just a sales rep.

🔹 Do you have direct access to engineers, production planners, and supply chain managers?
🔹 Can you pick up the phone and get a real answer, or are you stuck waiting for an email response for days?
🔹 Is there a structured communication process that keeps you informed at every stage?

💡 If you're constantly chasing updates, your project isn't a priority—you’re just another PO in their system.

The Takeaway?
Choosing an EMS partner is about more than the standard checklist.
🔹 Look for a partner who pushes back when needed.
🔹 Test them in high-pressure scenarios before you commit.
🔹 A good EMS partner provides a dedicated project manager, ensuring direct access to engineers, planners, and supply chain experts.

When thinking about the most remarkable inventions of the last 100 years, many ideas pop into our heads. Among them, however, we don't always notice the backbones of the devices we consider discoveries - the PCB. What is interesting to learn about the 'ordinary' PCB? 🧐

➡ The creation of the first PCB is attributed to Paul Eisler, an Austrian inventor. He wanted to see if it was possible to use the printing process to place components on an insulating surface, rather than connecting them all by physical wires. While it may seem surprising to us, his 1936 discovery did not immediately succeed in changing the world. Paul started working for a printing house, where he shared his idea and the company invested in it. The boards came into mass use in the 1950s.

➡ The 1940s saw the first method of component assembly, THT. It wasn't until about 20 years later when SMT, or surface mount component assembly, became popular.

➡ What is also interesting is that in the 1920s Charles Ducas patented printed wiring on an insulating surface (wood), but at that time it was created from brass, not copper - as it is today.

➡ While mentioning the wires, one must admit that the boards can definitely be described as wireless. The components are connected by copper tracks, which are able to transfer electrons without the use of physical wire.

➡ As well as the components, the PCBs are also shrinking in size. We can already find PCBs in the smallest electronic devices.

➡ Typically, circuit boards are tinted green. Why? You can find out by reading our blog post - follow the link in the comment section.

Soon we will be celebrating 100 years of PCBs! 🎉 Do you know any other interesting facts about circuit boards?

At TSTRONIC, we do not produce the PCBs themselves, but we successfully assemble components on them - in other words, we bring them to life!

There are a couple of things in the EMS industry that have always been and will always be with us when quoting for any new project - one-off costs called Non-Recurring Expenses, or NRE for short. These are the costs associated with implementing a new product into production and are the opposite of production costs, which are volume dependent and paid on an ongoing basis. NRE costs are associated with developing, designing and putting your project into production.

Why do you pay NRE at all? 🤔 As such general terms go, they include any activity that is unique to your project or its new version. New revisions for either may or may not result in there being one-off costs. NREs are only created for your project and are not equal to the costs charged to other clients. Once all the necessary work and tools for that particular production are in place, you can say that you can produce that exact project for the rest of its life (in the same company, of course).

What is usually (they vary from project to project) included in NRE costs?

· Design and stencil production
· Programming and profiling of machines
· Preparation of documentation
· Preparation of fixtures
· Preparation of testers
· General production preparation

The key to success is always transparency and honesty in negotiations and discussions. 🗝 When talking about a new project with an EMS company, you have to remember that NREs will always come up eventually.

Our day-to-day operations are driven by Lean Manufaturing, one of the most popular manufacturing philosophies in the world. 🧐 Although in times of shortages on the electronic components market companies are not able to operate 100% efficiently and as quickly as possible, Lean Manufacturing incorporates many other aspects.

The philosophy assumes "lean" production, i.e. more economical management of resources, thus increasing productivity and quality. In the concept of Lean Manufacturing the most important are the employees, their development, good communication and continuous improvement of production processes. ⚙ Employees should be aware that each of them is the key to the success of the company and thanks to them we can provide the customer with a product of the highest quality in the shortest possible time.

As you can see in the graphic below, there are five steps of implementing Lean Manufacturing in a company. These have been defined by James Womack & Daniel Jones in their book "Lean Thinking: Banish Waste and Create Wealth". These are:

· precisely defining value from the customer's point of view,
· organising all value-adding activities along a so-called Stream,
· establishing a smooth, continuous flow of value through the Stream,
· implementing a pull system, making the Stream responsive to the customer's current needs,
· and finally the most important: continuous improvement and seeking perfection.

We will be telling you more about these principles in the future, but for now we leave you with some basic knowledge about Lean Manufacturing and we hope that the topic has sparked your interest. 😉
