How to solve various web scraping challenges? 🤔💎

While scraping the bloomingdales.com website, we had to find solutions to two major obstacles:

🔸 Bloomingdales uses geolocation to tailor products to users based on their residence. As the client was interested only in products available in the US, we used proxy servers located in the US to scrape proper items.

🔸 The product page had two parallel layouts. The product list page used AJAX (a technique for creating web pages), so we performed request-based scraping and reverse-engineered the website. Then, we could craft AJAX requests.

71% of software projects fail ❌ And here’s how you can avoid it for your project:

One of the best ways for a successful kick-off is creating a ✨proof of concept✨. You can use it for any type of software project - and yes, including web scraping, too! ✅

What is a proof of concept in web scraping? 💡In this case, PoC is similar to those developed for startup projects. It helps to:

🔹Verify a mutual understanding between the founder and technology partner
🔹Define project scope and requirements
🔹Estimate the budget.

Still unsure whether you need a PoC for your web scraping project or not? Read more in our latest blog post and feel free to reach out to us with your questions!⬇️

How to use web scraping in e-commerce projects? 💡

One of our clients reached out to us to scrape over 6500 products from 43 brands at the bloomingdales.com website - the clothing, accessories, and jewelry marketplace. We compared the prices collected in April and August 2022. Thanks to this, we could analyze:

📈 price increases & decreases by product and brand
📈 timing and value of promotions and discounts
📈 detect products withdrawn from the market.

Based on the meaningful and ready-to-use data and analysis outcome, the client could optimize their own marketing and pricing strategy.

How to scrape a Cloud-flare protected page? 🙋🛡️

Although they are highly secured websites, there are a few ways to bypass security measures and scrape data. What can be the solution?

In one of our projects, we utilized asynchronous scraping and sent multiple HTTP requests to the site every second. In this way, we were able to easily scrape all 1.5 million records in just 1h 30 min every day. 💪

Browser-based scraping or HTTP-based scraping - which method should you choose for your project? 💡

To make the right choice, you should take into account your requirements and the type of scraped website. Let’s have a look:
➡️ For simple websites that don’t use JavaScript, HTTP-request-based scraping will be faster and will consume fewer resources.
➡️ For dynamic websites, in case you need to obtain relatively few records, you can choose browser-based scraping.
➡️ For heavy-volume scraping of a website that contains JavaScript code, HTTP request-based scraping is the only right solution.

✨ Sounds complicated? Read our latest blog post and learn more about browser-based and HTTP-request-based web scraping:
