World-first: digital identity created directly for timber at the source

A working prototype has demonstrated the ability to assign a trusted, globally unique digital identity directly to timber at the moment of production.
No ink. No labels. No RFID. No consumables.

The identity is created once by certified equipment, permanently associated with the material itself, and can be verified within seconds using a standard mobile device.

Validated across wood species, including Radiata Pine, and integrated with the StanForD data standard, the solution has been demonstrated with project partners in New Zealand.

Manufactured products received their identities decades ago: VIN numbers, GTIN codes, container identifiers.
Natural materials remained the missing chapter.

Cars have a VIN. Retail products have a GTIN. Shipping containers have an ISO ID.

Every one of those identifiers rebuilt an entire industry around it.

Natural materials never got theirs. A log still enters the global supply chain anonymous, and forestry has spent over a century trying to fix that. Branding hammers, paint, tags, RFID, QR codes, DNA, blockchain, decades of large EU research projects. Every method solved something. Every method broke somewhere the forest chose for it.

Reading it all back to back, the issue becomes clear. Almost everyone asked "how do we mark this log?" Very few asked "how does it get a trusted identity, and where does that identity come from?"

A mark is added after the fact. An identity is created once, at the source, already carrying its origin. Which happens to be exactly what and are really asking for.

Some engineering problems are hard because nobody has seriously attempted them. The identification of an individual log is hard for the opposite reason.

From a timber log to a trusted digital identity

For decades, the timber industry has relied on physical markings, documents, and manual processes to demonstrate origin and movement through the supply chain.

The LOG ID Project is changing this approach by creating a direct connection between the physical log and verified digital information, enabling a new level of confidence in provenance, traceability, and compliance.

This milestone demonstrates how advanced identification technology, forestry data standards, and digital platforms can work together to deliver:
