In most cases, the thing that makes a great entrepreneur is different from what it takes to run a large, mature company. Founding a company requires dreaming up crazy ideas, taking risks, and pouring all of your energy and passion into something that may never work.

The problem is that once you've done that, it's pretty hard to be objective about what you built. It's even harder to let go when you've grown something beyond what you're capable of leading.

In the first quarter this year, U.S. startups raised $69 billion from investors—41% more than the previous record, set in the fourth quarter of 2018, according to data firm PitchBook. The average valuation for startups at all stages also reached a new high and more than tripled from last year to $1.6 billion for late-stage companies. “I’ve never seen it this frenzied,” one investor tells the The Wall Street Journal

Years into a boom for venture capital, deal flow and valuations are reaching new peaks, and among the biggest beneficiaries are the companies vying to become the next big social-media platform.

The last recession in 2008-2009 served as a reminder that great companies, such as Airbnb, Credit Karma and Uber were founded during a time of crisis.

Investors and founders forged ahead and learned to adapt to a virtual environment, with COVID-19 impacting sectors to varying degrees. Healthcare which has traditionally been slow to innovate saw a surge in interest from investors (42%), followed by remote work solutions (32%).
