Let's take safety to another level. Remember what happened to OVHcloud some time ago? The caught fire and large amounts of data disappeared...

How can you make sure your data is safe even if something like that happens? LizardFS has a solution: a geo-stretched . That means your data to a different location: city, country, or even continent!

To scale, or not to scale, that is the question...

The growth of your business means the growth of your data, often exponential. How to scale your to keep up?

Your vendor will be telling fairytales about unlimited scaling, but what's the reality? At some point in time, you'll start losing on performance due to a growing number of users. Then the cost of yet another "storage box" will knock you out. So, theoretically, you can scale, but at what cost?

Is there a way out? Sure, it is! The benefit of being is you're not dependent on the hardware, thus you've got virtually no limits.

Unlike other solutions, LizardFS is linearly . That means you can add both users and storage space without losing performance. You can add a disc or even a whole – just plug it in. LizardFS will automatically make sure everything works properly. With LizardFS, the more nodes you have – the more performance you get disregarding the number of users.

Is scaling with LizardFS limited? Practically no: you can scale up to 16 EB. Our current record is just over 1 EB of cold archive data on a single cluster!

What about accessing the on your cluster? Not a big deal with obviously. But what if you run a post-production company and your team is doing 4K renders on Macs or Windows?

Your vendor says no problem, we'll set up a "gateway". That means they will set up intermediary for your Macs and Windows to access the .

Sounds reasonable, but what 3 downsides your vendor didn't mention?

1. Gateway server is a single point of failure. If it fails – any of your clients won't have access to the data. Setting up a few of them could be a solution but that's a lot of additional costs...
2. Performance will plunge when you add more clients. As a result: a huge cost of scaling or not able to scale at all.
3. Configuring gateways in a safe way isn't that easy. You want your storage to serve your business goals rather than be your sysadmins headache.

There is a better solution though! native clients for Windows & macOS enable accessing the data cluster directly without intermediaries.

As a result: no single point of failure, no limit for scaling the number of clients, configuring easier than installing CounterStrike.

The choice is obvious, isn't it?

When you plan to build data storage, cost efficiency definitely has a high priority for you. You need to store 1 PB of data but suddenly, the storage vendor says you'll actually need 3 PB of disc space!

The thing is, to safely store data you need to replicate it across the cluster. In this case, it's 3 replicas – that's why you need 3 times more disc space.

Is it the only solution? Well, of course not! LizardFS has a mechanism called Erasure Coding. Instead of replicating data, it creates special codes that are able to recreate lost data fragments based on the remaining ones. Eg. Erasure Coding 5:2 means 5 actual data fragments and 2 protection codes. Any 2 discs or servers may fail and you lose no data! What's important: you now need only 1.4 PB of disc space to store 1 PB of data on the same safety level.

That's not it. LizardFS has no limitations on Erasure Coding configuration! You may even have different configurations on every single file of your storage.
