HackPR: Organization
HackPR is a not-for-profit student organization registered at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus and the Puerto Rico State Department. Our mission is to organize Hackathons and other technical activities where students and the general tech community can meet to improve professional and technical skills. HackPR: Events
The first HackPR occurred on December 2011 in
San Juan, PR with around 60 students and industry representatives. On 2012, HackPR moved to the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus for this second iteration. We hosted over 100 students and were joined by over 30 representatives both the public and private sector. On the third edition of HackPR, on Spring 2014, we received nearly 200 developers and the support of top tier companies such as Google, Parse+Facebook, Microsoft, DigitalOcean, SendGrid, MongoDB, Etsy, Mashery, Goldman Sachs, Medtronic, Honeywell, the Puerto Rico Technology and Science Trust, among others. Our last event had representation from over twelve higher education institutions in Puerto Rico and six high schools. Over 85% of the attendees were from technology related fields but we also received students from diverse majors such as; Finance, Industrial Engineering, Business, Physics, Mathematics, Communications and Arts. We had upwards of 20 project presentations ranging from simple applications such as a custom grade average calculator, to hacks allowing Google Glass to use facial recognition with Facebook, a text to sign language translator, among others. Our judges panel was strong and diverse, including developers from Twitter, Parse+Facebook and GE as well as the Director of the Computer Science Department at University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus, the Assistant Dean of Engineering for University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus and the CEO of the startup Cryptico.
