Scientists in China have developed experimental contact lenses that let people see near-infrared light, which is normally invisible to the human eye. The technology could one day provide a lightweight alternative to bulky night-vision goggles.

The soft lenses contain tiny nanoparticles that convert near-infrared light into visible light. They work without batteries or built-in electronics.

In laboratory tests, mice and human volunteers could detect flashing near-infrared light while wearing the lenses. Researchers also found the effect was stronger with eyes closed because near-infrared light passes through eyelids more easily than visible light.

The technology is still in the experimental stage and has important limits. The lenses cannot see in complete darkness, detect body heat like thermal cameras, or replace traditional night-vision devices. They only work with near-infrared light sources under controlled conditions.

Researchers believe the lenses could eventually be used for search and rescue, medical imaging, secure communications, and helping people with some types of color vision deficiency. More testing is needed before they are available to the public.
