A tangled but telling story from the AI world this past month. The lead character is Anthropic, the company behind the Claude chatbot. Here's how it played out.

🧠 A call to slow the whole industry down (June 4)
Anthropic, one of the biggest AI labs around, urged the industry to slow or temporarily halt work on the most powerful models. The argument: AI is closing in on "recursive self-improvement," the point where a model starts improving itself without human input. We're not there yet, they say, but it could arrive sooner than society is ready for.

🚀 The most powerful model yet (June 9)
Five days after calling for a pause, the company released Fable 5, by its own account the strongest model it has ever put in public hands. Alongside it came Mythos 5: the same model with far heavier cybersecurity muscle, kept to a narrow circle. To stop that power from being abused, Fable 5 shipped with built-in safeguards.

🛑 The US government steps in (June 12)
Three days later, Washington intervened. The Commerce Department, citing national security, issued an export directive barring access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for any foreign national, inside or outside the country, including Anthropic's own non-citizen staff. You can't verify citizenship on the fly, so Anthropic pulled both models for everyone. By the end of June, access still hadn't come back.

🤨 A bit of skepticism
This smells like more than safety. Anthropic is heading for a stock listing valued near a trillion dollars, and critics point out that if you spend months calling your product practically a weapon, sooner or later a government takes you at your word. How much is genuine worry and how much is PR and rivalry, you can decide for yourself.

🗂 One request to delete yourself from data brokers? It's coming

Most people have never heard of data brokers, but these firms keep detailed files on them anyway: name, address, location history, purchases, relationships, all compiled and sold without anyone ever signing up. Until now, getting out meant opting out of each broker one by one, which almost nobody actually finishes.

The new part
California built a single front door for it. Under the Delete Act, the state's DROP platform lets residents send one deletion request through a central portal, and registered brokers must process it starting August 2026. One submission instead of chasing hundreds of companies on your own.

Before you get too excited
This is California-only for now, so it covers California residents and no one else yet. But these things travel: one state builds the tool, others copy it. Broker-registration laws are already popping up in places like Vermont and Texas, so a one-stop deletion model spreading further is a fair bet.

🔹 Opt out of the biggest brokers directly. The large ones all have request forms, even if they're buried.
🔹 A reputable removal service can do the legwork if doing it by hand feels endless. Check who you're handing that job to.
🔹 Slow the new data down: reset or delete your mobile ad ID, rein in location sharing, tighten app permissions.

The internet was supposed to be one network. In 2026, it's quietly becoming fifty

We tend to picture "the internet" as a single, borderless place. That picture is fading. The web is fragmenting into national segments, each shaped by its own laws, filters, and infrastructure. The term for it is the splinternet, and it's no longer a forecast. It's the operating reality.

The numbers tell the story. Access Now's (https://www.accessnow.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/KeepItOn-Internet-Shutdowns-2025-Annual-Report.pdf) latest report counted at least 313 internet shutdowns across 52 countries in 2025, a record high, with at least one disruption somewhere in the world every single day. These aren't always dramatic blackouts. More often it's quieter: throttling that makes a service unusable, or a single platform going dark.

Three forces drive the split. National security, with governments walling off their information space. Data sovereignty, with localization laws requiring citizen data to stay within borders. And censorship, restricting access to foreign news and platforms to control the narrative. China's Great Firewall and Iran's national network, capable of cutting roughly 90% of international traffic while keeping the domestic web alive, are the extreme end of the same trend that softer data-localization rules sit on.

It's tempting to read this purely as a rights issue, and it is one. But it's also an economic drag: the OECD estimates that reducing these frictions could cut global trade costs by around $1.6 trillion a year. A fragmented internet is more fragile, more coercible, and worse at solving problems that cross borders by nature.

The open internet isn't guaranteed. It's a choice that has to be remade, repeatedly, by everyone who depends on it.

🎮 How attackers pull a streamer's IP – and why "just don't leak it" is harder than it sounds

A lot of people assume a streamer's IP is safe as long as they don't post it anywhere. In reality, the leak usually doesn't come from the streamer at all.

🔍 Where it actually comes from
The classic case is voice chat. Older peer-to-peer voice systems connected players directly to each other, which meant your IP was handed to whoever you talked to. A lot of "how this streamer got DDoSed" stories trace back to exactly this – someone in their own lobby pulled it during a call.
Third-party tools are another path. Random overlays, "viewer counter" sites, sketchy Discord bots – anything that sits between the streamer and their audience can log connection data. Streamers install a lot of these without thinking about it.
And then there's social engineering: a fake sponsorship email with a tracking link, a "click here to verify your channel" message. One click on the wrong link can be enough.

💥 Why it matters more for streamers
For a regular person, an exposed IP is low-risk. For someone live in front of thousands of people, it's different – a DDoS attack at the wrong moment kills the stream, and an angry viewer with your approximate location is a real safety issue, not a hypothetical one.

No single thing fixes it, but the basics go a long way: be skeptical of links even when they look official, audit the tools and bots you've connected, and route your connection through a VPN so the IP exposed in any of these leaks belongs to a server rather than your home network.
