Radar flood analysis of Capua territory- (CE) - Italy

On 18/01/2023 the town of Capua in Italy and the surrounding areas along the Volturno river were hit by a devastating flood. The torrential rains caused rivers to overflow and led to widespread damage in the area. While floods are not uncommon in this region, the scale of this particular event was particularly significant. It quickly became clear that a more effective and efficient way of monitoring the situation was needed.

In this case, Sentinel satellite images and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) flood analysis came into play. The Sentinel satellites, which are part of the European Space Agency's Copernicus program, provide images of the Earth's surface. The SAR flood analysis we made uses this data to detect and map flooded areas. The combination of these two tools provides a fast and accurate way to assess the extent of a flood and its potential impact on people and the environment.

One of the key advantages of using Sentinel satellite images and SAR flood analysis is that they provide a quick view of the affected area allowing a more comprehensive assessment of the flood situation and enabling decision-makers to make informed decisions about how to respond.
Another important benefit of using Sentinel satellite images and SAR flood analysis is that they are not affected by the same limitations as ground-based methods of monitoring floods. For example, poor road access or a lack of visibility can make it difficult to get an accurate picture of the situation. With satellite imagery, however, these limitations do not exist, and the data can be collected and analyzed quickly and efficiently, even in areas that are difficult to reach.

In conclusion, this simple example highlights the importance of using Sentinel satellite images and SAR flood analysis to monitor and assess the impact of natural disasters. This technology provides fast and accurate information about the extent of a flood, and it has the potential to significantly improve the response to such events and reduce the impact on people and the environment.

Gissky (PLANETGIS SKY S.R.L.) is proud to be a part of the EO-PERSIST — HORIZON-MSCA-2021-SE-01 project, a groundbreaking study on the effects of climate change on Arctic ice.

The project aims to understand the adverse impacts of climate change on local and regional Arctic environments, infrastructures and industries using Earth Observation (E.O.) data. The project proposes the development of a single cloud-based system to make E.O. data more easily accessible and usable for permafrost studies.
The system will leverage existing services, datasets and technologies to create a continuously updated ecosystem of E.O. data, promote methodological advances in permafrost studies, and provide indicators directly connected with socioeconomic effects. The project brings together staff from academia and industry to establish a collaborative research and innovation environment.

The project consortium is made up of 10 academic and industrial partners Harokopio University, NTA National Technical University of Athens, Cloudeo Ellas from Greece, F.M.I. from Finland, Lund University from Sweden, Cloudeo from Germany, Cloudferro from Poland, University of Bucharest and Gissky from Romania, and YetitMoves from Italy.

The Gissky team recently attended the kick-off meeting in Athens, Greece, alongside other leading companies and universities in the geospatial sector and is excited to be a part of this critical project and to contribute to the understanding of this vital issue.

• Posibilitatea de a monitoriza schimbările ce au loc pe suprafața de teren vizată;
• Facilitate chiar și în zone greu accesibile;
• Monitorizarea stării de sănătate și a dăunătorilor pentru spații verzi, păduri sau terenuri agricole cu ajutorul camerelor multispectrale;
• Extragerea datelor volumetrice și a datelor despre altitudinea relativă a elementelor;
• Integrarea soluției cu analize spațiale și culegeri de date;

Înscrierile la 2x1 CEF Hackathon se incheie pe data de 17 Ianuarie. Un hackathon este un eveniment de durata limitata, unde participanții, care pot fi indivizi sau echipe, se aduna pentru a crea soluții inovatoare pentru probleme specificate sau teme date. Aceste soluții pot fi dezvoltate utilizând tehnologii, date sau alte resurse furnizate de organizatori sau de participanți.

November 26, 2022, has been a dark day in the history of Ischia Island (Italy, 18 nautical miles from Naples), where a landslide occurred with devastating effects on the island's population and economy.
These natural disasters are becoming more common due to climate change and represent an increasingly high risk to these susceptible areas' populations. Material damage and, most importantly, loss of human life could be avoided by investments made by the public administration in infrastructures for monitoring and managing loss prevention and mitigation measures.
The equipment, techniques, and methods of observing the Earth today allow the monitoring of natural or anthropogenic effects through specific analyzes that can help prevent and combat the effects of these types of disasters. Among them are applications based on satellite images, aerial images, or other types of smart sensors that can be integrated with all different data types.
In cases like this, the use of SAR data (Satellite Aperture Radar, images taken with a radar sensor from a satellite at a well-defined time interval and with World-Wide coverage); allows through specialized analyses, the monitoring of the movement of the Earth's surface, and show parameters like: speed, intensity and the type of movement in well-defined time intervals.
Gissky applied professional analysis methods and techniques to the island of Ischia using radar satellite images (February 2021 – December 2022) and discovered areas with subsidence processes that overlap with the delimitation of the November 26 landslide, as well as a higher intensity in other neighboring areas of the island. (See the images in the post). Subsidence processes represent a lowering (sinking) of the Earth's surface that either natural or anthropogenic processes can cause. In this case, the displacements were calculated in millimeters and reported annually, so the values (See image) are represented in millimeters/year.
Landslides are dangerous for the human community, so every municipality must monitor infrastructures with specialized remote sensing companies.
